this tour poster was released in support of an album that had the same cover art and design wrapped around it. the inside was weird pyramids and desert scenes. the band liked it very much,as they are 'geetar rock' in a sort of ironic way and not say a 'nashville pussy' way. the font was used on the album package..it was all supposed to be sort of 'hi brow' 70's pop.
i liked it they liked....i think it works well as a tour blank because the blank works as a balanced element in the over all design rather than just being a box.
Voice of dissent checking in...
First, let me say that I'm not familiar with this band's music. All I know about them is what I could gather from the other posters on this site, the band's website and Darren's comment about it being "Southernfried geetar rock". SO - my comments may be totally invalid and irrelevant.
THE BAD - To me, this poster - it's subject matter in particular - is about as far removed from "Southerfried geetar rock" as you can get. I can understand why the band wouldn't like it if the poster doesn't fit their "vibe". Promotional posters' primary purpose is to PROMOTE. This being a tour poster makes the importance of using a strong and relevant graphic even more important since it will, in essence, be representing the band on several different occasions.
Also, I've got to wonder about the typeface selection. It seems pretty arbitrary to me. That typeface, to me, would be more appropriate for a techno-style group (which isn't what Drunk Horse is all about from what I can tell).
THE GOOD - I did notice that a similar design was used on one of the band's Man's Ruin albums. I'm sure that folks who follow this band would probably be familiar with that artwork and would connect this poster with it.
I also like the color palette and the Coca-Cola style wave at the bottom of the poster. That is a nice touch.
As an illustration, I like it, but as a promotional item, I don't think it is overwhelmingly successful.
I'm not saying any of this because it doesn't look like Frank's normal work. I'd say the same thing if it were anybody else's poster.
I have no doubt that I'll probably be slammed for having a dissenting opinion (and about one of Kozik's posters too - double bad on me). Go ahead...I just wanted to throw in my five cents.
Thanks,
Keith
This is very nice. Elegantly simple. While it may not strike most people as being your style, I recognized it all the way. Since I own damn near every cd Man's Ruin ever put out, I recognize the font and general look from countless Man's Ruin cd's. That's as much your style as say bunnies. At least to me anyway.
yer right it looks nothing like yer previous work but that's what makes it so fucking cool. I never would have thought, in fact when I wrote my first comment I had no idea that it was you that did this. nice.
heck with em if it didn't look like a "kozik"... what, so you are supposed to be pigeonholed into a certain look all your life when it comes to your work? That's crap... how ya ever supposed to grow as an artist if yer constantly doing the same stuff over and over for everything you do....? sheesh............
