I see and let me be the first to say that this was a rushed poster and (thetruth) i thought the layout was weak as soon as they started flyin' off the press. Thats what i get for rushing to get something done! After the show I thought it should have been more biker and blues related considering the crowd that turned out. Thanks for the crits.

the truth - seems i lost most of my last comment. so, i'll just let it die here. please ignore the last thing - it's about 1/20th of the whole comment.
Just saw the last post... :-)
Layout is different than image choice or subject matter... I don't debate the "technical" stuff!!! My comments were in reference to the choice of subject matter only.... :-p
Just chiming in my 2 cents here....
I've been a staunch contender that since each of us are different, that we all bring different interpretations to the table. When I listen to Dick Dale, I think "beach/surf" music... beach/surf makes me think luau and luau makes me think tiki, so I can see where this artist was going with this. Betcha Dick Dale music gets played at a lot of tiki events.
There are a great many images on posters here that I have no idea how the artist came to use for that particular poster, like how some celebrities end up on some posters... do they relate to the music or is that just what the artist wanted to do? Just because I don't see it, does it make it wrong?
Yes, Truth, many of the posters on this site are created not only to promote the show, but also to sell. Why? Because somehow the print run must be paid for. And the supplies, etc. It would be great if the promoters paid for that, but 90% of them do not. They still want the posters, but won't drop the dime. Sad, isn't it?
thetruth -
there may be a bit of a 'generation' gap here. what dick dale may mean to you vs. what it may he may represent to this artist may be completely different. a lot of the artists on this site (and indeed a great many concert posters of all generations) seem to not care if the imagery is appropriate to the subject matter. the imagery on this poster seems to be a bit of an 'exotica' cliche (for lack of a better term) when infact dick dale has nothing to do with that sort of music except an occassional beach and surfboard. after seeing him play today, and being familiar with the peculiar ins and outs of his career, i would not have gone 'tiki' either. but i generally try to know my subject matter as thoroughly as possible ( the operative word is 'possible').
