lureSend lure a message :   this kind of imagery doesn't interest me either. it's very well done, well thought out, and i do dig the type. it's just a genre we've seen so much of. i really like seeing the stuff here that break these "traditions." but, for this genre, emek's got an amazing body of work here. i'm sure the fans dig this stuff.   2002-01-08 05:45:27
vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   i cetainly didn't dog it. it's just not my thing. but it's well done - and even with all the hidden meanings unrevealed it's obvious that there was alot of thought behind it. keep up the good work.   2002-01-08 05:05:10
philaarts.comSend philaarts.com a message :   its funny, because with emeks posters, if you dont have one in front of you, its really hard to comment.. there is so much going on, and the extreme detail is overwhelming..
i always find it funny when people slag without actually holding the poster in front of them

EMEKSend EMEK a message :   Since you mentioned interpretation, let me give you mine. All of my posters start out with a concept first. The Rage poster shows a giant statue of Liberty, a symbol of America and of freedom, but in another sense a symbol of america's abuse of power and manipulation, America the system, the Emperial Oppressor, "the Machine". The statue's crown represents the coming together of the 7 seas, but in my depiction it is 7 syringes which i made representing the 7 C's, (and cc's) I drew 7 syringes and each one contains the cycle for the way new ideas are absorbed by the American system: 7 C's: First a new idea is Condemned for being radical or anti-establishment. Then, it becomes Co-Opted and dilluted so it loses its original power and meaning, So that it can be Conformed to and swallowed up by the masses So that they can be Controlled by it as it Consumes them and they Consume it, then it becomes Corrupt and it Collapses, awaiting the next trend... meanwhile in my poster the statue is also choking all of these chained hands that are trying to reach up to it, and it is going to use its syringes to pacify them so that they will again wear their chains willingly- on the chains are Bar codes, representing the loss of indiduality, they are just masses, consumers.. Also, because of Rage Against the Machine's other politics, on either side of the show information are little aztec gods of death fortelling what is to become of the system... I also have a lot of other hidden stuff going on the poster, like in the dark space where 2 of the oppressed hands are breaking free of their chains there is a secret message that only appears when you hold the poster up to the light or at certain angles- a little trick I learned that I put into a lot of my posters- always something extra hidden in them... All of these symbols and concepts and compostion are my idea and my imagination, which is what i love most about doing this kind of art in addition to all my "fine art"...since it takes me so long to hand make every poster, each one has its own story, whether people care or not, i do it for me, and for anyone who cares to notice. and if you have read through this entire diatribe, i offer my verbose apologies.   2002-01-08 00:52:11
vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   My background is practically self-taught. I went to a small orlando area vocational junior college. I was just lucky enough to stumble upon a REALLY good teacher who opened my eyes.
Your right about one thing - it's about looking cool. That 'smog' poster is WAY cool to a lot of folks me included. Obscure is cool. Mystery is cool. Subtle is cool.
Kosik and coop rely on shock. I don't buy into it. Huckleberry hound with a bong. So? A devil girl with her tail to her mouth...oh I get it....
Regarding the choice of poster - good one. It's hard to not agree with you about it.
My first thought is the name is enough to know what's going on. But your right it satisfies all the requirements.
So does k-mart. I can get poultry AND a radial saw blade. Do you shop there? So does a dodge neon. It's got four wheel and gets you there. Even if you got to pick the color would you buy one?
These are silly examples, but my point is sledgehammers will do the job of gaining entrance but so will lockpicks or some fancy talking or quick-thinking.
I think RATM makes the point themselves with there choice of album art for renegades. The subtle Paul Rand (?) reference notwithstanding, it's subtle and ironic and a far cry from EMEK's interpretation.

BasilSend Basil a message :   Vibranium, here is a poster that I believe promotes a show well. The artwork is very striking. I must admit that I am a fan of illustration moreso than 'clip' art, but lets not even get into that. The colors in the poster display the atmosphere of this band and their message, the art doing so even more. Yet, the art is universal enough so that even a person who has no idea what the band is about could 'identify' with whats being pictured. Some would hate it, others would agree...but I think very few people whould be apathetic about the ideas in this poster. So, it appeals to the fans, but sayd more on a wider level to people who couldnt care less about the band. The image is attention getting. You dont walk past this poster without stopping to look. THATS what a 'promotional' poster should do. The subtleties are amazing in this image. I will say that some of KOZIK and COOP stuff appeals to me also. It PROMOTES the show with a direct call to the senses. The average man on the street hasnt been to art-school. Ive seen people post stuff about composition and lines and balance and all this other stuff which goes COMPLETELY over my head. Note to all of you artists- most of us, the average people who you make these posters to appeal to, only care if it looks cool. Thats why KOZIK s more embraced than some of his contemporaries of the 90s, like a CHantry. I think his art just hits more folks where it counts.   2002-01-01 13:18:31
