I'd never buy another man's canned lettering style, especially a contemporary. Why bother, I can make up 20 of my own if I wanna put the work in. I collect House's catalogs, but I've never bought any of the font sets. I figure I can fake them if I want one.
i don't repect house because of some things they've done to me in the past. however, i won't go into it here.
yes, you can "buy" coop's 'typefaces', but it is nowhere near the same thing as drawing your own into the image. in fact, it's totally different. do you think i need to explain how it's different, or do you understand what i'm saying?
10 or 20 pounds in the right places, mmmm....
Now you can buy Coop's lettering canned. Art, why have you dissed House Industries in the past (some old post on this site, don't know where). Just curious.
If Coop wanted to, he could put enormous breasts on all his text to make it more intere$ting for him.
text isn't as "fun" to draw as say, hotrods, or bologna sandwiches.
Face it, meat is more fun than words.
good point!
you notice how coop drew this lettering (it's technically not 'text' or 'type') seperately and then PASTED it onto his image, trying carefully not to disturb anything important in his drawing? this is definitely a learning exercise. later, the lettering was worked in as part of the drawing itself.
he never took the next step, however, where you take the lettering and literally make it part of the imagery. he sorta stopped with placing the lettering above or below his central image like a caption on a gag panel.
I think it's odd when hand drawn text is considered seperate from drawing. At least I feel there seems to be a seperation, I do it.
It's still an illustration, only of words.
well, fans put jennifer lopez and britney spears in the same leagues as mozart or the beatles. iwas was talking about something that is a secret weapon of coop's. his lettering is impressive.
tons of fans disagree... he looks all comfy and satanic in la...
his trademark illos keep him all good.
id say now, people care less about his lettering and more about those "boring" illos.
not disagreeing with the professional crits on him at all..
i've always thought coop had a knack for lettering. don't much care for his illus., however, which is EXTREMELY dirivitive and unimaginitive. very skilled, but dead.
but his hand lettering has always been a great spark on his posters. without it i wonder how far he'd have gone?
i mean, look how interesting the 'flaming lips' lettering is on this otherwise unspecial early poster. definitley something going on with that shit.
When I was in middle school I snagged one of these off a wall. I didn't know who the Flaming Lips ,but I loved the poster. Now I find out it's a Coop. I'll have to dig through some boxes to see if I can find it.
I've heard Wood Pussy, and yeah, they stink. Had a really nasty cover on one of their 7 inches...I can't make out what it is, but it looked nasty.
As far as the poster goes, it looks very 60's-ish. Good to see his early stuff.
This is suposedly one of Coop's very first posters. He signed it Cooper on this one but not on the orange one I posted. i got these from a friend who went to high school with him in Oklahoma and used to roadie for the Lips. He's in a aband called Wood Pussy out in LA now. Spin voted them one of the top 5 worst bands in america a while back.
