where your yo yo is hanging you should have hand drawn the type in the same style there. A valuable lesson is if you are going to put this much effort into a great illustration don't cop out on the type. good type and integration is as important as the image every time.
I think what Prof. Hadley set up for the class is awesome and would love to see more curriculums do stuff like this. All these posters should stay on the site. Hope Stu didn't ruin it for everyone.
The proximity to the left edge is just a problem with sizing the file...my fault for not catching it. In fact, the top balloon should bleed off the edge, too. But I see the problem with the type...especially what Dusty!'s saying about the positioning as a whole not letting your eye take you through the poster. My problem so far is that I can see that I don't like my type, I just have no idea what to do with it. Thanks for the help.
Its the face and the positioning.
I see what your trying to do with the face but i would suggest doing the opposite.... Contrasting the quality of the type face with teh quality of the illustration will set it off a little bit more... A sold non outlined face i think would really tie everything together.
As far as positioning you have the headliner in the exact opposite place my eye wants to go, I would maybe see if you cant fit it in behind the "stilt" on the right side.... that will give you a really nice negative area on the left and will allow the viewers eye to travel in one straight line right down the page. As it is right now my eyes starts with the balloon and goes right down the page and off and then i have to come back as an afterthought and see they might be giants.
for me, its not necessarily the type face, but rather the placement on the page.. being right on the edge of the paper. maybe even just bringin it off of the edge by a 1/4" to match the spacing of the image from the opposite edge? just a suggestion.. but seriously, very nice work!
Any type suggestions? Like I said I'm very new to this and would appreciate the input.
By the way, I'm trying to act casual about the comments from schmickle and strawberryluna....I'd seen your work earlier and it's incredible.
Thanks Denny. It's my first attempt at one of these, but I could get into it. In fact, I think Tooth said something about maybe doing posters for smaller bands/venues like the Jinx, and I think I might give it a shot. Prof. Hadley is planning on going over to the Drowning Creek gallery JohnnyThief was talking about, so maybe we can all get something started for bands that can't afford to pay for the big guys (yet).
And I know there are a lot of questions about the legitimacy of having these up, but TMBG saw these at the venue and signed the boards they were on. So while they might not have sat down with us to work on them, at least they had the chance to throw them on the floor and crap on them if they'd wanted to. Of course, maybe they were tired and it just never occurred to them.
I dont know if they should be...but this is for a Savannah GA TMBG show, and I thought they were pulling those because the prof asked clay too or something...nothing against this guy, I am still just trying to wrap my head around what happened
