i would have paid $15 to see this poster. This is the shit. Passion, history, Art; and it works to define the band in a way that is not usually JR's goal. He did a lot with this. The images are superb and the message has impact. Damn good work.
it was just way polished sounding, and i admire the fact that they are trying to try other things vocally, but i dont think it was working here.
btw, i just bought this poster, and really, its only because of jermaine's story!
i was just about to say that nolen! my friend bought the album and although its a different direction for them, theres still some good experimentation and innovation for da nation!
dude! how can you say the new album blows?! so many of my friends think it's "less agressive" than the older stuff but if you really pay attention, and if you've seen em play the new stuff live, you know it's still a harder, smarter kick in the pants than most bands could dream of!
jermaine, thanks for sharing the story of the show, etc... I always like when people do that on here...more of us should..!
i just saw this, and jermaines comments ... i just have to say that i really REALLY like jermaine as a person now (not having met him or even known much of his work before this site). Its nice to see that someone can admit when a band touches you personally like that.
Fugazi is and will always be one of the greatest bands of our time (even if the new album blows).
When they came to hawaii the last time, they played 2 shows: one in honolulu and one on maui. at the end of the show in honolulu, ian announced that if anyone wanted to come to the maui show, the were welcome, and would get in free.
myself and a couple of friends decided to pay the $100 roundtrip just to see them play again, it was the most amazing weekend i ever had in my life. and they are just about the nicest group of guys you will ever meet.
no problem
you BUSINESS is your BUSINESS
fugazi always has made a point of very cheap vinyl cds and anti merch.
when i saw them last i think tix were 5 bux. and still cds not more than 10 bux.
i in no way said jermaines work isnt worth anything zombie. its ironic to me that a POSTER is more than the ticket price to see the guys.
Yea, 'softhandedlady'...I kinda felt that, too. They weren't nearly as 'stiff' as they had been the several times Id seen them in the past. But then, I wasnt really able to communicate with them on a personal level in a one-on-one setting back then, you know?
Kathleen Hannah said that everyone thinks theyre this real stoic, anti-everything band, but theyre really funny and soft guys.
As far as being 'soft' on the poster thing...I had constant email messages with Ian through the Hands Up Houston kids, and we just got VERY clear on what would be done and how it would be done.
'Softhandedlady': what a name :)
i didnt say you sucked.
just ironic.
a real flyer band-then a silkscreen for over 2times the cost of the ticket.
glad you got buttered up 8)
sounds like fugazi must be gettin soft in their old age.
Yea...I suck...huh? 8)
Ian was outside after the show with all these kids and I walked by and he shouted:
'Dont buy those Jermaine posters!'
and I said...
'Im going to do an ANTI-Fugazi poster!'
and he said...
'Well Im gonna right an ANTI-Jermaine song'
It was fun....
Guy told me in all their years, it was the best, most appropriate FUGAZI poster they've ever seen...and - even if he was buttering me up - I was on 'cloud 9' for the whole nite.
his kid who I dont know was standing right there when Guy said that, and he leaned over to me and said...'God, thats gotta make you feel good.'
You see so many bands in this line of work...and you meet a lot of rock and roll 'people'. I've never been the 'star-struck' kind of person...but there are about 3 or 4 bands that...man, when Im in a room with them, all I can think is: Im 14, in my bedroom, mad at my parents, to old to play with my action figures and still enjoy it but too young and attatched to them to give em away, too-skinny, loud on the outside but really shy on the inside, lusting after several girls who didn't know I existed, and starting to get real tired of people in general because none of them understand me...none of them but Ian MacKaye. At 14, that made sense...and even though Im a grown man, for a second or 10, I got flashbacks last night...and that happens EVERYtime Im around or come in contatc with any of these 3 or 4 bands.
Thats sick.
FUGAZI just rocked my head. Im worn out: my throat is sore and I think I pulled a muscle in my neck.
Im outta shape. :-(
Ian and Guy both make me ashamed of myself. Im really gonna start exercising more.
Ill post pix on my website tomorrow.
'We want control of our bodieees...
DECISIONS....will now be ours...'
GOODnight
Regarding the whole illo/design/content/concept, etc stuff, thats why my favorite artist doing posters today is Jermaine. Seeig a lot of the work upclose and how its produced, I just think the guy consistently puts tons of thought into what he's doing. And the artwork, in my opinion, is amazing. I think posters like this FUGAZI one stray out a lil' further than most and really are good ideas, whether they succeed or fail. I give the guy credit cuz he has the guts to try. Like this one:

You know, just reaching out and having the balls to not let what others might think stop him from reaching.
I really think that in todays current batch of artists doing these things, his stuff along with 3 or 4 other guys, will be remembered for a while.
I think Art makes some good points: this whole illo/design thing is kind of a waste of time. I think Drowning Creek and many others have said the same thing.
Just my thoughts ;-)
Wow. Other than some of the old black and white flyers for them which Im partial to, this is the best poster-art style poster for Fugazi that Ive ever seen. It could be a prototype of what a poster for this dedicated and honorable band.
The line-art here is really rad. A different style than what im used to seeing from Jermaine. I want to see this one close up. How big is it? Format? Screened/offset?
Heres what the small text says:
(UNDER the year 1536)-
'Against the orders of the Church-State, William Tyndale secretly translated important documents into the language of the common peoples. Betrayed by a friend, he was taken
into custody. He was strangled and burned at the stake.'
(UNDER the year 1890)-
'Ignored during his lifetime, Vincent Van Gogh struggled with his stunning visions of the world. Plagued by his own nagging doubts & emotional illness, he saw and 'felt' life with unusual intensity. He was branded as a 'madman' for it. He was a human BEING.'
(and under the year 2002)-
'Tickets $6.00'
Yea, its a LOT of text. I once had a 'name' poster artist tell me to avoid too much text on a poster because people didnt want to see that. I knd of agree, but I really dont. I came across this batch of CUBAN Political posters from the 50s/60s about a year ago...and on most of them, theres a tiny illo and TONS of text. They come off really powerfully, because of what the text says. Man, if you can 'draw' with words...thats what I want to learn how to do. Im not really as good as I should be at that.
