The illustrations are good, but come on... this guy gets so much credit and I can't figure out why.
His style is totally a cross between Bill Plympton and Ralph Steadman... not bad, but I don't find it as stellar as everyone seems to think.
But what REALLY kills me is his terrible type... his ignorant, sloppy, hack-job, horrible, lame use of typography borders on criminal. How do you make as many posters as he has and never "get the hang" of using type as a design element?
If he spent one afternoon with a typography 101 book... or on a web site even... his work would improve immeasurably. Strikes me as lazy and ignorant... which seriously detract from the sketches. I know it sounds harsh, but honestly... I've been scratching my head on this for about a year now wondering what the fuck is up with the terror that is Hess' type...
the pun thing never bothered me really either. except for the clutch - elephant riders one. not sure why - that bugged me - looks fucking killer in person though. even the jesus lizard and hammerhead puns didnt get to me - i woulda done the same im sure.
i agree murph. it's fucking great. everyone talks shit about the bad puns or whatever. he's fucking REALLY talented and has HIS OWN style.
his text is weak at times but not always and the illo's ROCK.
