And I still think this poster is one of the best ever.

vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   The day i was going to do a DURAN DURAN poster on a clear sheet, the paper rep told me Jeff spec-ed a clear sheet for a poster. i was SO dispondant. I'm sure the fact i thought to print this one on an actual subway map, stemmed from that day.
a great thing about these guys around here...they push my creativity...

goochSend gooch a message :   To answer the Sapphire Question: The best thing about the Sapphire and Orlando's "Poster Scene" is that they are lucky enough to have a great promoter (Figurehead Productions) there who believes in actually promoting a show and really is a fan before he's a business man. Since the late 80s (when I first started doing stuff for them) he's cultivated a higher standard for show posters and these expectations have created a competitive spirit that not only inspires better posters from various Figurehead artists but other clubs as well (like the House of Blues). Pretty funny coming from a place associated with Mickey Mouse and plastic furniture, huh?   2002-01-15 20:32:17

SpeedSend Speed a message :   When I was frontman for Home Style we would play gainesville, then Sapphire, then Stella Blue in Miami, then come up the coast and play the more puck places. I loved the Supper Club. Someone always made a tight poster, we always got paid tons of cash, and they really took EVERY show seriously, from the first time we opened for a band there to the last time we sold it out, we always got treated so well by management. Of course, that was a few years back, could be way different now.   2002-01-15 18:43:21

SpeedSend Speed a message :   Oh, I was talking about printing it on an actual map, rad...   2002-01-15 18:36:05
SpeedSend Speed a message :   And that is way cool (sorry to sound like a fifteen year old girl, but I fight like one too) choice of paper stock, I can't believe a shithole like Orlando is lucky enough to have ONE good designer, much less, like four. Is Sapphire Supper Club still open? They used to comission pieces and band bands way mucho dinero.   2002-01-15 18:35:35
SpeedSend Speed a message :   god, i cannot type for shit!   2002-01-15 18:32:41
SpeedSend Speed a message :   It's not contradictory at all. The designer is showing off alot in this poster, and it hurts the job he was paid to do. So I guess what I should have said was "tpp much art/bnot enough advetising". It's a sticky point, because I really like this poster. I'm just pondering the whole art vs. advertisement think. The guys from AA are right though, if your poster is tight enough to draw people's attention (which it is), then it works, because they are more likely to approach. I think AA pulls this sort of mystery off with stupendous success. How am I slamming someone with comments like these?   2002-01-15 18:32:14
vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   thank god it's quiet - i have work to do...damn distractions.   2002-01-15 18:25:13
Dan ApparatusSend Dan Apparatus a message :   Oh boy, oh boy. Once again, I'm late but I really want to throw in. Two points I want to make:
1. This whole debate is useless. Vibranium is an artist, this is what his work looks like, this is the media through which he expresses his ideas. Think if you got two people in a room to argue Picasso Vs. Warhol, they would get absolutely nowhere. The big question, does this poster look like the band sounds? I think it does. Would a layman (or laywoman) get it? We are the worst people to ask. We already have our opinions and know what we like.
2. (I know I'm asking for it on this one.) Don't use typeset letters unless you understand them. This may be a bad place to post this because Vibranium does know type but it was brought up so... Art is subjective but type has actual rules. Now, you can feel free to break them but understand them first and THEN break them. If you don't know how to use type then draw it yourself, that's fine. Just don't start stretching it to make it fit because that's not what it's there for. Find a different wieght, find a more condensed face, if you don't know what i'm talking about and you have typeset your posters, not cool. Sorry to be pissy.

vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   hey, I'm an average rube in Orlando and i think the type is just fine.
Oh and chachi is right 'mastabatory' and 'too much concept' is WAAAY contradictory. so figure it out first speed. then post it. sounds like your slamming for the sake of it.
and yes on actual NYC maps. thanks for the compliment.

BlueJellyBeanSend BlueJellyBean a message :   Quick thought..The supports of the rollercoaster could represent a map in themselves..albeit one drawn by a madman..but..no offense here..isn't that what NY is about..a touch of craziness..rollercoasters, yeah!..A perfect antidote to a tedious subway ride..and normality. Add that to printing on 100 handout maps and I am laughing LOUD..way to go..literally...   2002-01-15 15:51:27
SpeedSend Speed a message :   fair enough   2002-01-15 15:32:25
SpeedSend Speed a message :   I mean, and thanks for asking, that it's a very beautiful piece to look at, but if I was the average rube in orlando, I'd barely be able to find the band's name in this piece, much less the venue. I'm not blasting, it's obviously a nice piece of work. And I spelled masturbatory wrong.   2002-01-15 15:26:07
SpeedSend Speed a message :   Oh my gosh, another free-thinker getting slammed by the eliteists of this site, say it ain't so! QBWaggle, you say whatever you want, over 1,000,000 of yer countrymen have died to give you that right, and don't let the little hipster group that lives on this site get to you. Send me a message anytime brah. And check out the swagger at my site, www,squaresville.com, maybe we're a little more yer cup of tea. Oh yeah, and the strokes poster I release next week will be the best one yet, so the point is moot. Free speech is a right, not an award given to the few who like to stomp on opinions. And I like the poster, but it's masurbatory. Too much concept, not enough true advertising of the show. Is it actually printed ON an NYC map? Cause that would be kind of dope. I made a dash-rip-rock one time on barf bags and passed them out at the show because so many people just got flat blasted at their shows.   2002-01-15 15:15:42

moxiegustoSend moxiegusto a message :   I really like this poster. Yes, it is simple but that is what makes it so effective for me. The idea of screening it on the actual NY subway map to me is a bit of genius. It catches the eye and obviously has made others think. Just because it is only one color should not be a negative point. It is striking to me. I wish I had a copy of my own. Hats off to you Steve. Keep up the great work. I'll definitely be checking out your other stuff. thanks fore the inspiration.   2002-01-15 14:18:46

printmafia-connieSend printmafia-connie a message :   I love this poster, too. Reminds me of the classic movie "The Warriors" , which reminds me of gritty seventies New York style, which reminds me of the Strokes. IN MY OPINION - Great Concept, Great Thought put into Lettering, and Creative Choice for paper stock = It Rules! Where can I get one of these?   2002-01-15 13:29:11
JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   Looking at this further, I like how the band name and venue seem to be signage at the entrance (?) of the roller coaster. Maybe it wasnt intended, but it looks nice.   2002-01-15 13:22:14
JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   I really like this one. Ive always had a weakness for wooden roller coasters: just look at it. The very architecture of a wooden coaster looks 'cool'. And the fact that these are printed on NYC subway maps...man, thats just awesome. And, if the maps were free of charge and Vibranium just took a stack of em home to print on...well then THAT borders on (dare I say this to Vibranium) 'genius' design. Taking something produced by the government and using it to print a poster on...man, it's 'punk rock' ethic in it's very execution. AND you save money on paper. It does fit the band. Good job, Vib...its the first of yours that Ive seen and really liked. Id hang this one up.   2002-01-15 12:35:41

Stainboy ReinelSend Stainboy Reinel a message :   This design has caused such a little stink here. That in itself is success in my book. Then again, what the fook do I know?!

goochSend gooch a message :   Geez, my posting is so redundant--I can't keep up with you guys. Anyhow, I really don't care what anyone says opinion wise. I'm glad QWaggle challenged my opinion. That's cool, it's just like a conversation or debate. Just respect my opinion and be prepared to back up your own when you get called out. Nobody likes a hit and run.   2002-01-15 08:21:50
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   maybe if instead of scanning the image he should have redrawn it? would that validate it?   2002-01-15 08:21:09
vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   QBW that's narrowminded and uncreative. Only skilled draftsmen within your narrow accepted aesthetic are allowed to create?
i said it before and i'll say it again. I respect an illustrator for WHAT he chose to draw as opposed to HOW he draws.
CONCEPT IS KING.

and i'm not sure that's something anyone can really have an opinion about. is that really debatable?

Dusty!Send Dusty! a message :   cool. im out like the lights, 3rd period lunch, what a way to start the day   2002-01-15 08:14:29
QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   Well Cap, its my opinion. Period. Scanning a photo and laying text over it...the image may be attractive, but to me, it in no way equals the creativity inherent in a more 'hands-on approach'. Thats my opinion. Im in my late 40's. I didnt like it when Warhol did it. I didnt like it when Sen Yung, and later Gerald Fox did it. I didnt buy it when Chantry did it. And I dont like it now. No personal attack on the artist(s), but THAT is my opinion. Hate me, demonize me, whatever. I dont think Im playing the roll of SPEED, at all. SPEED was a personal attcker. I only comment on 'the work'.   2002-01-15 08:12:54
Dusty!Send Dusty! a message :   creative effort that is   2002-01-15 08:12:49
Dusty!Send Dusty! a message :   personally, saying that there was no creative put into the work, i think that is rude, just my opinion though...   2002-01-15 08:11:35
goochSend gooch a message :   Hey, hey. It's just a opinion. I appreciate this poster's concept and execution. I really associate the Strokes with NYC (they're often compared with other NYC legends, the Velvets and Television) and this poster says it. The Cyclone, while not screamingly NYC like the Statue of Liberty, is a legit association. A NY Subway map is a legit association, as is the use of NY Subway symbols in the date. The fact that it's printed on an actual map is icing on the cake. I like this usage, it's not a hammer to the head ya know? It's more of a knowing nod. Not to knock the other posters (Jermaine's are particularly cool) I just feel this is a great expression of a NYC band. But hey, that's what makes this site so interesting.   2002-01-15 08:09:46
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   QBW, I think The Cyclone is pretty synonymous with something fun to do in NY. It's part of one of the reasons I wanted to go there...Coney Island. Also, it's at the very end of one of the lines...not sure which line, it's been a while since I was there, but that helps tie it in with the subway imagery too.
And it's pretty obvious the type here wasn't just slapped on. on the band's name "The" is taken from an Emigre font that emulates old sign styles (old original signage is prevalent around Coney Island), and the placement of "strokes" fits over where the sign is on the ride (I think)..plus, the use of circles and squares around the type to reflect the look of the subway signage again shows it wasn't 'just slapped on'. It's called Typography, the study and use of Type.
Oh and the reason you probably haven't seen The Cyclone or Coney Island in general on any "I Love NY" campaign is coz Giuliani is all about whitening up the town for tourists....it's called gentrification but they call it "beautification"...and Coney Island isn't exactly in a picturesque community that would attract tourist dollars. I'm glad that dude's gone and so is everyone I know who lives up there...but that's for another messageboard I guess.

vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   the maps are given away free in NYC to anyone who asks for one. I was resourceful and got ahold of about 100.   2002-01-15 08:05:35
QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   Captain, all Im saying is that this is my opinion. Im entitled to it. You cant say to me 'dont sit there and say...' Man, I can say what I want. I havent been rude, malicious or nasty...Im just stating my opinion. The funny thing is, I didnt ask for ANYONE elses thoughts but 'gooch's'. He made the statement that its the best STrokes poster hes seen, and I wanted to know why. I got answers from EVERYONE else but the person I asked. I didnt ask to hear ANYTHING else, and certainly not to be called 'uneducated' and 'a child': Im older than most of you on this site, Im sure. But, I welcome the thoughts I got without resistence because everyones entitled to opinions. For WHATEVER reasons, dont deprive me of mine.   2002-01-15 08:05:14
lureSend lure a message :   yeah, i gotta say that's a MAJOR insult to say there was no creative effort put into this. beyond that, sorry to say, it does make you look like you don't know what your talking about.   2002-01-15 08:03:58
Dusty!Send Dusty! a message :   I think in this argument you are playing the roll of speed. I thin it would have been fine to say you didnt like it, site the ways, etc. etc. but dont you think its alittle much to straight up handsdown there was no creative effort put into it? Its your opinion of course, but you know, some things you just need to leave unsaid if you dont want people to bite back.   2002-01-15 08:01:44
lureSend lure a message :   and, yes, non arists should be allowed to comment all they want.   2002-01-15 07:59:32
QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   So, because I dont like this poster, Im 'uneducated'. I swear, its gonna be so funny to watch this...Cause no one will jump on this guy the way they jumped on SPEED...and hes doing the same thing! In 2 post youve called me a kid playing on my parents computer, looking for trouble, and uneducated...because I dont like a poster you like. You really have no right. And the elitism is seeping out of you with every post. Please, tell me what govt. office I must goto to recieve a pass which allows me to state my opinions? ART comes from the heart, primarily. Every child is born an artist. Picasso said that. Have you studies him? No, maybe I havent been to art-school and I dont own books full of hidden 'knowledge' that only degreed artists are privy to. But, I got these 2 eyeballs I was born with..and they work. THAT entitles me to my opinion.   2002-01-15 07:58:31
lureSend lure a message :   no, Chantry would like this.
QB, there's plenty here you're not getting. and that's ok. this stuff doesn't work for you. but, jsut because someone doesn't illustrate their own images doesn't mean it ain't art. simple as that.
and the cyclone is a great image for this band. the "i heart ny" thing or the towers (r.i.p.) an apple, all that could come of as trite. this has several layers of meaning. it works.

JGexSend JGex a message :   lol, I still want to know how the maps were acquired....   2002-01-15 07:57:17
Dusty!Send Dusty! a message :   QBwaggle: I think the point of the rollercoster, is maybe more that it is a symbol of NY, but not a cliched one... I think if Vibranium slapped a statue of liberty on there it wouldnt have as much impact on the people it is impacting. On another level, its a great design touch to print this all on a NYC Subway map, use a type face very much relating to the subway etc etc.
To say we (and i think im speaking on some level for Lure, Vibranium, ChaChiChi, Kliensmith etc.) dont put creative effort into the work? seriously- fuck that. I dont think any of us have attacked the work of drowningcreek or jermaine, and i think we respect their form of poster design very highly. Dont sit there and tell some one they dont put a creative effort into their work just because you dont understand it. I think ALOT of people on this site would applaude this piece because it is very creative, it has a great concept and its excecuted amazingly well.
  2002-01-15 07:55:22
JGexSend JGex a message :   How do you KNOW he knows nothing about design? Sounds like an assuption to me.
You have no idea who people are on message boards. For all you know it could be Art Chantry under an assumed name posting.
  2002-01-15 07:50:05
QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   See what Im saying? I havent attacked ANYONE personally. You guys crucify someone like the Speed guy fo making things personal...but now you get personal with me. Some of you do the same stuff you ride SPEED about...only you clean up the language..and instead of profanity, you use textbook 'condecension'. Whether you mean to or not, thats how it comes off to LOTS of us. If you could only see the private messages that pass between us 'not-artists-people' when you guys are rambling about how dumb a poster REALLY looks, after youve meticulously broken it down.   2002-01-15 07:50:00
QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   How am I looking for trouble because I give a crit to this type of poster? You design guys do it ALL the time. You guys ruthlessly pick apart every poster that comes on here thats illustrated. If I was a young artist, I would post my stuff here: it would be too much to take having it operated on in front of the entire poster community. No, I am not an artist. But the eyeballs God gave me still work.   2002-01-15 07:45:49
JGexSend JGex a message :   I thought everyone said comments from non artists were OK. Has that changed? Or does QB NEED to have a body of work before he can comment?   2002-01-15 07:45:17
QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   Thats not even 'design'. Design requires SOME effort. No, thats 'scanning a picture and slapping some text on it'.   2002-01-15 07:42:34
QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   Your digging pretty deep, there Nolan. OK, the NYC connection Ill accept. But the whole 'cliche' thing...Man, rollercoasters DONT make me think of NYC. Theres 100 things I could name that identify with NYC before Id say 'The Cyclone'...call me crazy, but Ive never seen the Cyclone on an 'I Love NY' campaign. It just seems like these 'photo' things you guys do...you know...you can say all you want to make them sound SOOO deep...but I just cant buy it. All the comments on this site regarding these posters (all the good ones, i mean) or by you same circle of guys. Do all of you live in the same subdivision in Florida and make a pact to pump each other up? Cause I just dont get it. Im not personally attacking or tring to be rude...but...I dont know. At least DROWNING CREEK put creative effort into what they did. The drawing fits the Strokes PERFECTLY. The chick is a dominatrix holding whips and stuff. Whips=Strokes. So, I could play the cliche game, too. Im just saying that some effort went into it. And scanning a picture and slapping text on it..NO ONE will ever convince me that thats art. Thats not art. Thats called 'scanning a picture and slapping text on it'.   2002-01-15 07:39:16

lureSend lure a message :   nolen's all over it! he gets it! and slams the band in the process! touche. although, i like the strokes.   2002-01-15 07:21:48
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   It fits the band in my eyes for two reasons:
1. They're from New York! and the image, if I'm not mistaken, is The Cyclone at Astroland Amusement Park at Coney Island...in New York. The type plays off of the design of the New York subway system.
2. The Cyclone is a cliche (in this case in the good way) image associated with New York and The Strokes are another cliche Velvet Underground wannabe rip-off rock (they just happen to make it big coz their rich daddies back them and people think they're cute).
Also, the colors on the map are just beautiful.

QBwaggleSend QBwaggle a message :   THIS is the best STROKES poster youve seen???? Im never at a lost of amazement at some of the posts on here. What about Brian Ewing's STROKES print? Im just curious as to why it doesn't work for you. The DROWNING CREEK one is nice: how did it slip by you? Jermaine has done 2 great Strokes posters: whats up with that? Even the Print Mafias one, with the records on it. All of the above really get at the heart of the essence of the band, whether you like em or not. How does this poster 'really nail it'? Its a scanned photo of a damn rollercoater. Explain to me the depth and meaning of this. Im really wanting to know how this otherwise common image so perfectly captures this band.   2002-01-15 07:13:21
