adam swinbourneSend adam swinbourne a message :   this poster is RAD!   2005-07-18 17:30:47
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   considering the violence of the previous year's show, I understand the censoring, don't condone it, but understand it. I hate security at shows...or rather that meatheads make it so shows need security. Dyou have a scan of it with the text?   2002-02-12 16:06:57
JohnnyThiefSend JohnnyThief a message :   The type on the bouncer's chest was hand letterd!! (It was really nive too,...! )See where censorship gets you?????????   2002-02-12 15:59:08
lureSend lure a message :   yeah, i think someone is supposed call "forums" or something.   2002-02-12 14:17:21
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   Didn't someone say a long time ago this stuff should be kept to the forums? I thought that was a pretty good point, but I forgot about it...so...maybe later today I (or someone else can jump on it first) can start a relevant discussion of type usage in a forum?   2002-02-12 12:58:12
JGexSend JGex a message :   This same type argument is getting real old, guys.   2002-02-12 12:53:41
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   BJB...teh coaches 'play' theory you had was interesting, since unfortunately so much of this type of hardcore attracts jock-mentality type guys...what punk rock for outcasts? what? anyways...I really thought the dance patten refernce was really cool. Chantry a long time ago did a "Give Peace A Dance" poster where the feet prints were of these shoes that had peace signs molded into the soles...really cool image...kinda like the opposite of this! anyway...I've seen this in real life and the silver does make it really nice.   2002-02-12 12:19:28
BlueJellyBeanSend BlueJellyBean a message :   On second thoughts that could indeed be some tribal dance they are doing...   2002-02-12 12:03:31
BlueJellyBeanSend BlueJellyBean a message :   Dance step pattern, eh? took the superbowl reference and came up with coaches 'play' charts..shotgun formation seems apt given the violent football/skinhead associations...   2002-02-12 12:01:40
SpeedSend Speed a message :   I just happen to have this print on my wall as a gift from aa friend. My first deep reaction was how perfect the etched out hardcore fonts work. Yuu also have to see this poster and it's mettallic silver to get the real tension between it and the type, which looks vey fitting on the poster.   2002-02-12 11:34:06
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   yeah I have to agree with lure here. Condensed, compressed, light, bold, ultra, extended etc. Fonts are made in all these various weights for a reason...I know not everyone has access to full font families with all the weights and everything, but it does bug the piss out of me to see a nice illustration and idea with type that's stretched or warped or whatever....though I know we all have ot make sacrifices (hell on my new Pinback poster I didn't get to hand-render some of the lettering like I wanted coz of time constraints, so I know how it is).
Put as Atticus might say "If I had my druthers..."

vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   if your going to maniupulate a font do it convincingly, purposefully. squashing and stretching it to 'fit' a layout seems amateurish to me* *by MY standards, by which no-one else has to abide by or stick to.   2002-02-12 09:09:48
lureSend lure a message :   actually, you shouldn't. it destroys the integrity of the original drawing of the font. instead, use a font that was drawn condensed or expanded.
(mosty tongue-in-cheek)
  2002-02-12 09:02:27
philaarts.comSend philaarts.com a message :   ok.
so fonts that resemble hand drawn features can be used, but should not be stretched or squashed..
(playing devils advocate)
how about regular type set fonts, can you stretch them in posters :)
  2002-02-12 08:58:13
vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   use'em. i wouldn't stretch them and squash them so much tho.
just a tip.
  2002-02-12 08:30:10
JGexSend JGex a message :   Oh great, another freaking art critic who has no identity wanting to tell other people how they should do their job....
We suck. We use computerized fonts.
  2002-02-12 08:02:24
philaarts.comSend philaarts.com a message :   ok..
i know we go through the knit picking etc.. but what IF they PREFERRED TO USE THIS FONT? as the designer maybe this is what they liked, and its like saying, also "man, they should have made the background black to make it look more like a crowd scene in a mosh pit"....
or is it just that you are saying, THIS FONT should never ever be used anywhere then, since it "mimics" hand drawn lettering...
how about other hand drawn looking fonts in the world? should we do away with them.. sorry to argue, but ive just seen this so much, it gets a little old...
just a thought.

PediniSend Pedini a message :   Wow. That lineup is from... like 1990! I like the dance-step diagram in the background.   2002-02-12 06:47:46
philaarts.comSend philaarts.com a message :   ouch.
is there a rule when and when you cant use a font? or when you have to hand draw a font?
i must have missed it..

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   CENSORSHIP! CENSORSHIP! Jeff Wood IS 'the man'!
;)
  2002-02-11 22:24:26
JohnnyThiefSend JohnnyThief a message :   Thnaks for the praise, all,... but don't you think the design would make more sense if the word 'SECURITY' was printed on the bouncers chest, right about where it looks all heavy black, like it was blocked out on the press? Sorry, Jeff I just hadda say it! ;)   2002-02-11 21:49:20
philaarts.comSend philaarts.com a message :   this along with all the stuff out of the drowningcreek studios has just been fucking great..
i cant stress that jpgs dont do justice to the posters.. when they are in front of you, and the metallic inks are shining, and its a blacklight etc.. its just incredible.. johnny did the social d for philly, its sublime..
no mistake that drowingcreek does many posters for us up here... 1. great artwork 2. great attitude 3. professional 4. on time!
what more could a promotions dept want?
  2002-01-10 14:14:41
vibraniumSend vibranium a message :   you can't go wrong with houses' bad neighborhood fonts, huh? But i'd much rather see the type 'worked' more as opposed to just strectched and squashed...   2002-01-10 12:56:36
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   Hell yeah! Johnny Thief rules! Great Illustrator.   2002-01-10 12:19:04
JGexSend JGex a message :   Yes, they are. As with most of our posters, a percentage of the run is sent to or bought by the venue or band... or in a very few instances, they were plastered around town gratuitously to advertise the show. In only a couple of instances, the printer didn't get the poster to us in time to get the poster up for advertising purposes.... but what can ya do?   2002-01-10 11:51:57
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   I figured it was silver ink. I'm just curious, are these posters being used to advertise? Being hung around DC?   2002-01-10 11:45:07
KJSend KJ a message :   oopsies.. that should say "harDcore"   2002-01-10 10:28:03
KJSend KJ a message :   3 Reasons why I like this poster: -i like the house industries fonts -the show is on my birthday -the words "superbowl" and "harcore" together at last   2002-01-10 10:27:30
JGexSend JGex a message :   The grey areas are actually metallic silver ink... looks pretty cool in person   2002-01-10 10:16:09
JGexSend JGex a message :   Yes, those are the fonts... :o)
I actually think "consistant" was what they said they liked about working with us. Punk music, punk artists... it works.
  2002-01-10 10:15:32
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   That's cool that it's a nice consistent job. Those House Flyer Fonts right? The boot print "dance step pattern" is a nice touch.   2002-01-10 10:11:02
JGexSend JGex a message :   We've been doing the art for this show now for 3 years.... they keep coming back for Johnny Didonna's inkwork. Jeff did the layout & design work on it.   2002-01-10 09:51:44
Nolen StralsSend Nolen Strals a message :   yeah I had thought about going to this last year when Bad Brains and some other bands were playing, but a fight broke out and somebody got stabbed 3 songs into Bad Brains set so the show got shut down early. Seems ot be an appropriately violent image.   2002-01-10 09:45:51
