Well I'm weighing in late here. This is a great piece of work. The imagery and the execution fit the band so well. The type is ugly and so are the Melvins. Jeff knows how to use ugly type well because he is a master typographer. I remember when I saw this the first time I was completely pissed off because I had the "wrong trim" idea for awhile and I was waitng for the right band to use it.
man, got this yesterday, thanks lure, this poster is fucking amazing, the paper the layout, u name it.. really really great design! the jpgs for his stuff dont do justice..
i love seeing stuff in person, as with almost every artist its just not the same till you see it upclose!
If you had put the cut in where it made the poster difficult to read would it have been rejected by a promoter?..am aware this could lead to a Rick Griffin discussion.. but would be good to hear what constraints artists feel today they have to work under to get unusual pieces seen...
i put the "cut" there so it would read better, melt banana's name in tact and you can clearly make out "melvins." but it was a compositional consideration as well.
The 'printing error' look of the piece makes it a non-conformists dream..not just that the image appears to have been cut and re-arranged..but there is overlap too..this oddity value ensures you gotta appreciate this..Against that backdrop, the typeface wins the day with me..requires something heavy..not that I know what i'm talking about..One final point..if the cut was made in the middle this would be too precise and all effect would be lost..A fine line?
I like that it's clunky, I just think of Verdana as more of a web font that's all...I do like the poster though.
I also like mx fluroide's comment on it poking fun at the assembly line nature of posters.
I like the fact that it seems to be poking fun at the assembly line nature of poster art. I mean we have all seen a million Melvins posters ( one of my all time favorite bands) or maybe thats just the way it reads to me? Just the opinion of a non-designer person.
it's something like 18" x 24"; in that range. the white and red printed on green, blue, brown and kraft colored papers. no big fans of veranda here, eh? not that i am, just wanted something clunky for this poster.
no this definitely is not my favorite font, and the sorta drop shadow thing is...okay...but I was just responding to how well the type reads even though it's broken up like it is
how big is this in real life? I waver back and forth on whether I like what I think are designer jokes in posters, books, etc...the one here being the poster looking like it was cut wrong or whatever, but the headline and image still read well and the colors are atypical enough that I like this a lot.
this is one of the best i've ever seen. i even had to rip off the whole 'repeated' image thing. you should see this one in real life its huge and great colors.
