"Remember what happened when some of us badmouthed Creed a few years ago? Yeah.. that's why I don't talk trash talk bands. The internet is real, yo. "
Are you kidding, or did that really happen?
Cause I would loooooove to hear that story.
The record industry would be stupid not to come to this website. There's hundreds, maybe thousands of artists here willing to work for peanuts. Even trolling the comments of posters for bands they like with their contact info, in hopes that maybe, just maybe the band will read it.
"why should i have any respect for some celebrities with no respect for other people in general?"
because people do not want to hire headaches. this band is connected to more than just 4 guys. you are clueless who reads these boards. totally clueless.
welcome to the industry.
first of all, they demanded that everyone leave the store while they were doing soundcheck. "all you people need to leave" they refused to go on.
so after taking forever, they start playing.
the drummer's monitr goes out...so he freaks, and leaves the stage.
he refuses to go and play.
after his managers coax him back out after ten minutes he finally comes back and plays some more shitty 4/4 beats.
they finish, ignore every fan, and done even care to thank or recognize the record store staff.
theyre the quintessential talentless rock-jock star assholes with egoes as big as their ridiculous fanbase. im not trying to act like its so beneath me to make a poster for such a band, but honestly, why should i have any respect for some celebrities with no respect for other people in general?
There's a really cool story on cnn about the KoL.... I think it's amazing they are where they are after growing up in less than conventional circumstances. Kids that slept in cars growing up probably don't know what being a primadonna means.
it is NOT a shitty poster..i like it nomatterwhat and i thought it s kind of funny and cool that the dislike of the music is expressed on the face of the statue.
not gonna read them all
I think if someone is giving you in- store credit to design a poster then you should probably try to make a good one
If you hate the band so badly that it somehow impairs your work than you should just decline doing the job
but what do I know?
I don't think it's at all necessary to like a band to do a good poster for them. If you can put your personal feelings in their proper place, you can then proceed to do a good job for them based on what they & their fans are about.
Who cares though?
Most people are douchebags on this website 95% of the time anyway. You might as well join in the fun!
Just do what you want to do and have fun. It's rock posters. No one has the "right" answer even though everyone acts like they do.
I've only been producing silkscreens for three. My current Co. has only been around for a year this month. I never came on this site making stupid comments. I came to learn and folks like Judy, Kozik and even Richie, as caustic as he is, learned me proper. When Art Chantry was here he had a ton of smarts to hand over. You really had to ignore the banter to get it all but it was there.
Tons of knowledge hanging out here daily learn to read through the delivery and see that even though folks are smartasses they know what they are talking about.
It's real easy to be knee jerk reactionary but it's harder to re-read and learn and then reply.
stinkbait....my comment about old assholes were directed at the guys just openly attacking me for no reason. im will ing to listen to the rest of you, and i know i have a lot to learn....ive nearly been doing posters for a year now.
Just because were smarter than you about how to do business in this industry doesn't make us jaded old fucks you punk.
We're trying to pass on knowledge from personal experiences to keep newbies from having a tough go at it. There is a MAJOR band who has a lot of posters on this site right now who's management is currently sending cease and desist letters to artists who made unauthorized/non representational posters. Most of the artists never even said they suck either.
The bigger GP gets the more the industry will take notice and they will come after those who are not on their side, simple.
So shut your fucking piehole and take notes.
"Shit man. this place is full of jaded old fucks. Who cares what the reason behind doing a poster is. Liking the band or not. Bottom line is this poster kicks ass. "
Apperently you felt so strongly about it that you JUST registered and acoount JUST now to address it.
Dirk is right. You are representing the venue if they hire you so why would you crap something irrelevant out? I've known bands to flip out on the venue due to stuff like this. Don't waste everyone's time if you think the band sucks. And if you take the job for money and still think the band sucks you still better do the job right or you suck.
I have no problems talking shit on anybody I deem worthy of my time and effort.
I also realize that no "big" band will hire me because of my shenanigans on this site.
I also have come to terms that if someone is gonna judge my artwork and work ethic by my off-color remarks on a website, then chances are, I probably don't want to work with them anyways.
In conclusion, I have realized that I will never become financially rich, people will always judge a book by it's cover, and that I am hung like a yak.
Thank you and good night.
My opinion, for what it's worth. Seems to me that even if you are working for the venue, the band is still ultimately your client.
I think you have a responsibility to represent them fairly. It's an ethics question. Like if Nike offered you big money to make an ad, you accepted and then publicly proclaimed that they suck and you hate them. Is that cool?
Maybe the band name should be small and Easy Street Records should be BIG.
Kings Of Leon's folks check GP out. They contacted us to do work but we were smack dab in the middle of that first Modest Mouse leg and had to turn them down. Beulah called me direct after spending 6 hours straight on here looking for someone to do posters for them. Wilco came to us through here because of a Spoon poster we did. We just got a call from a HUGE band because of GP. A band we'd never ever think would contact us. You're kidding yourself if you think people aren't looking. Foolish to talk shit on anything but Richie, Murphy and Dave here.
And Kings of Leon are one of the more interesting new bands out there. At first pass their lyrics and singing style makes no sense at all. Far from straight forward standard rock in that sense.
Some of you are gonna hafta learn a lot of hard lessons...
why do you conservative old men always freak out like this?
i said i didnt like the band, and then you all attack me like its your problem i made a design no-no.
so what if i dont like the band?
their not my client, the venue is.
i would tell these guys i hate their music, no problem.
their all rich enough...im sure it wont hurt their feelings.
Lawdy this has turned into a bit of soap opera- bullet points
A) I have also learned the hard way- don't do shit that you're embarassed by if you care about yer "art", for love nor £££
B) This poster is rather pleasing no matter how you slice it
"Jeph 2005-04-19 19:42:49
Without even looking at that link I'm gonna say it's a Seripop poster."
i bet you peeked.
BLOC PARTY, ILL DO A POSTER FOR YOU. I REALLY LIKED ROUGHLY 75% OF YOUR LAST ALBUM. I KNOW YOULL READ THIS AT SOME POINT.
"Amazingly enough, there are quite a few bands that I know for sure check in here occasionally.... or at least their management and/or merch people. Don't know about KOL, tho..... "
Yup. Sometimes I think most of the people here think artists are the only ones on this site. I know a ton of people in the industry that are in this site on at least a weekly basis. Look at Moss, he road manages 2 or 3 fairly large indie bands.
BTW, Kings of Leon, pay me to print all your merch on your next tour.
And also...if I thought the band sucked I wouldn't have done the poster in the first place.
That little shit comes off as a bigger elitist prick than me with his that band is lucky someone even bothered to take the time to make a poster for them cause they suck so bad attititude.
I don't have a clue who this band is. They probably suck.
who gives a shit if you say the band sucks... especially comming from you, goodtimes - you don't give a fuck about anything, (that's your MO, right?).
and I like the poster - I don't have an opinion on the band, except that the singer is trying to look like Steve Marriot circa 1967 - and doing a pretty good job at witch kinda offends me - or makes me jealous, either way.
Theres a huge difference betweeen a band "sucking" and "not being your thing"
It shows a tremendous lack of class to just arbitrarily say that someone sucks because they dont jibe to what ever your personal tastes are. Thats bullshit.
I was coming on here to say that I liked this, but now I wonder if there was any thought put into this beside you wanthing to do THIS visual on SOME poster.
Sorry, this is just my opinion but my biggest problem is with artists inflicting personal styles on artwork without regard to the band.
