Zach-
Marvin Gaye was going thru a nasty divorce from Anna Gordy, daughter of the prez of his record label Barry Gordy.
Marvin owed alot of alimony since he left Anna and shacked up with another (much younger) woman. To make sure Mr. Gordy's little girl got her money and he got the next record reclusive Marvin owed, Barry told Marvin that he had to give his ex the $360,000 that Marvin normally got up-front to record an album and the first $40,000 in profits from sales of said record.
So Marvin went into the studio with full knowlege that this record was basically going straight into his former wifes pocket and made it a concept album going thru the beginning to end of his marriage to Mrs. Anna Gordy Gaye. Hence the name "Here My Dear"
The album is full of references to 'pretty birds' flying away and 'singing sparrows'.
I hope that makes any sense.
