Jeff KleinsmithSend Jeff Kleinsmith a message :   Oh man that's funny! Poor Schultz was always the butt-end of Klink's pent-up Hochstedter rage. "Kleeeenk!"
Sputteringal, If I were to do this poster again I would place the type up a bit so that it nestled nicely into the curve of her side and under her hand. Everytime this one comes up I twitch a little about that "G". Having said that, I think the tension draws the eye to the band name.
Be careful not to become so attached to what they're teaching you in school. Absorb it. Honor it at face value, but learn to trust your own instincts to break those rules. Dig?

alPSend alP a message :   say...jeff kleinsmith..i'm curious as to how this was done?..is that an inking you did? and how big was the origional?...another thing along the lines of design...i've been being schooled on a thing called "tangents" i beleive...and that boss hog..the way it overlaps the skirt...and the "o" meeting the line of the figure...as far as my teacher is concerned...this would be avoided...any comments...i personally think its great...but it is a design issue?   2002-06-15 21:53:35
kevin jonesSend kevin jones a message :   no, i understand that, dont get me wrong ... shooting out the same kind of gigposter work would be like having a career designing brochures for a fucking bank or some shit. you have the opportunity to do whatever you want, why stick to one style.
maybe its just that youre older stuff is a little more "moody" to me?!?
youre new stuff is still better than my shit. adsfj;alksd!

Jeff KleinsmithSend Jeff Kleinsmith a message :   Kraftie, Part of what you're seeing now is that there a whole lot more folks doing this kind of thing now than they were back in 1994. (Let's be very clear, I'm not saying it's BECAUSE of me) I'm just saying it's the natural evolution of things. Very few people did posters that looked like this back then. I could coast on this kinda thing for my lifetime but why? I'm not doing this to make money or gain recognition I'm doing it because I dig the challenge. I'd go nuts shitting out the same stuff over and over for an entire career. For better or worse my career is marked by gentle undulating shifts in style incorporating my many interests. I'll do something until I'm bored and I'll bring various elements along as I evolve into the next thing. It's still always ME. I don't do it consciously but I've been doing this long enough to be able to look back and see what's up.   2002-06-15 21:34:33
kozikSend kozik a message :   Jason Austin smells funny.   2002-06-15 21:09:47
JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   lemme say that I think Jason Austin is really talented. Just in a totally different direction from the Geoff I knew...thats all. I personally think Jeff K. is doing some of his best work right now. He isnt trying to recapture some bygone era. He's wading out into the water, you know? Like I said...its an exciting time for us in this thing. ANYTHING can happen.   2002-06-15 21:09:05
kevin jonesSend kevin jones a message :   wow, im glad i wasnt the only one that thought this was good. honestly jeff, i like this much better than some of your current work ... however, i really like a lot of your partner's current work (at PP - especially the cat power poster which i do still plan on ordering).
no offense to you, i know you are a genius with a great background, and i know you have more talent in your little pinky finger than i do in my whole body ... but there is something about this that is lacking in some of your current work.
oh jesus, i sound like art chantry! does anyone have a pistol available?
  2002-06-15 21:07:08
JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   Yea, Geoff...Jason Austin was kinda holding you back. When you told me you were working with him...I dont know if you sensed my 'skepticism'...I didnt want to be rude. Glad you moved on...

Jeff KleinsmithSend Jeff Kleinsmith a message :   I don't know what it is about this poster. I get like 5 emails a month from someone wanting to buy this thing. (I only have 3 left). My intention at the time was to do a sexy poster without being obvious or lewd. Never been into the typical rock poster imagery, so a big part of my "thing" was doing something that was sorta anti-rock poster. I've used very few cars, cartoons, naked chicks, drugs (I mean I've used all of these things but just not on posters - hee hee). It's not that I have anything against them per se, I just felt like that was all that was being done at the time (early 90s). Among other things, I've always been super interested in the basic common object in a sort of Andy Warhol kinda way. Like the Band-Aid poster or the Kennedy matchbook poster. I like the idea of making any "thing" in to a poster. And I think it can be done well with a good eye for OPEN SPACE, a good deal of RESTRAINT, and a strong sense of TYPOGRAPHY. I got tons more that I'll post sometime. I see Factor 27 doing something similar and doing it well. I've known Geoff a long time and he's a stand up guy. He's come a long way since parting ways with Jason Austin and I'm looking forward to seeing more of his stuff.   2002-06-15 20:58:37
stinkbaitSend stinkbait a message :   I think my work has gotten better as a direct result of being on Gigposters. Prior to this I had a handful of people seeing my/our stuff and only had Jeff K and Art to compare my personal style to. Figuring I'll never catch those guys I kinda just did what I could bang out the quickest and still not suck too bad. Now after seeing Methane, AA, Lure, Thomas Scott....the list goes on, I am driven to keep getting better. My own partners kick my ass all the time so I got it coming both directions. It's a GOOD pressure though. Makes me think like I never have, makes me look harder for the original concept.
Stuff I heard Art lecture on about creating out of multiple sources to have your own was really eye opening. I don't have patience to do a sweet vine poster like Kozik or Illo like Jermaine. I'll always have the highest respect for that skill and focus. Just not my current style. Maybe someday, I gots plenty in my bean. It's too easy to swipe a pic , obscure or not, and make it new. This site and this level of exposure to crit is simply driving me to try harder. We'll see. Like I said before I feel I have a long ways to go and all the kind words are really inspiring. Even if it's lousy old Frank... :-p

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   Well git busy, homeboy...It aint nuthin but a thang...

kozikSend kozik a message :   I'm serious. I been looking at all this sweet work for the last month now, and I'm getting kinda bummed, cause my shit just looks retarded now.
I got a lot of catching up to do.

kozikSend kozik a message :   I'm gonna cut my hands off so I'll have an excuse.   2002-06-15 19:49:30
JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   Jeff K. is ALL THAT. I love this guy. I think he totally owns this 'style'. I think FACTOR 27 and METHANE are the 'heir apparents'...
Good stuff. Its exciting where we are right now. So many styles, smashing into one another and melding. Anything could happen...

stinkbaitSend stinkbait a message :   One of my al time favourites. This is why I design stuff...   2002-06-15 19:43:45
BLTSend BLT a message :   The funny thing about this poster is that Jeff was really busy so he had me cut the ruby for the seps and I missed the little parts of the fingers that are in the "HOG". Let's just say that he wasnt super happy about that. Lesson #1: Don't the printer who's high on fumes cut your seps.   2002-06-15 19:26:43
