also..... this is an odd poster in the fact that it is the only time i re-did a poster mid promotion because of comments on the GP.
i will always respect the gig-geek input but..... i doubt i'll ever change a poster because of it again.
yep. anytime i put female nipples on a solana beach gig i have to do one version with nipples ( for inside the club promo ) and another version with the nipples covered for street use ( i usually just go the "stars" route ). i always put the nipple exposed version up for sale on my site after the gig but...... looks like i missed this one.
86 Comments and not one about The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife woodcut by Hokusai. This is an awesome update of it. I don't care if it does or doesn't fit the band, this poster is great.
TWO WORDS - MASAMI TERAOKA! And as far as if it "fits" Paul Westerberg, his music, or his image, who cares? Obviously the majority of you don't know who he is, his old band or his solo music. This is a nice poster, period. Good illustration, nice font, nice colour choices...... SCROJO you are way too prolific.
i just submitted a more 'westerberg-esque' poster. defenitely not one of my best but.......i actually thought long and hard to come up with something dynamic/appropriate/original and....nope.....kept hitting absolute brain-farts.
Funny thing is, Paul's really mellowed out over the years.
Met him with a friend on the All Shook Down tour in 91 and he was a cock and wouldnt sign shit or talk to anybody.
Met him again in 93 and he was a total gent.
Odd.
well paul doesnt go on the internet so he wont be reading this.
but, for those who dont know westerberg or the replacements.. think punk/ dirtygarage punk/rock... he did the soundtrack for singles etc.
he is a very nice guy and got to meet him a few times on his last tour. cardoso did the graphics for his tour poster/shirts/pins.. he likes that stripped down design style very much.
i bet if he saw this he would just smile and say "thanks"
its a pretty poster, just doesnt seem to fit paul and/or his fanbase.
I think it's a cool poster, don't really give a fuck if it relates to Paul Westerberg or not. The concept to me looks like, "Come to the show, you'll have a good time." and I think Scrojo has succeeded on that front.
Finally, great face on the girl.
well.......it seems we can all come together on one thing........somebody needs to start
" Lucy Lu's Seaside Burlesque Review "
( i've got a poster you can use )
As a designer, I would have to take issue against stuff thats too "designery" here too.
Not to get into a flamewar but there are tons of posters on here that are basically pretty images, unrelated to bands in tone or concept. Alot of them are lauded and quite a few make POTW.
And youll notice a direct pattern between the laudits and certain "name" designers too.
Im sorry, maybe its a different and totally valid school of thought and I just dont "get" it, but I think its kinda invalid to submit say (and this is JUST an example - not specific) a beautiful illo of like a sailboat and then have like "Pedro The Lion" or something along the bottom in 12 pt text. Sorry, I just think thats wanky.
I could be wrong, and my work isnt all that great and I make mistakes invariably.
But I dont buy into that. Im not saying the poster has to directly reference a lyric or a title or anything, but I call "bullshit" on alot of these nice, boutiquey posters that bear little relation to the acts they claim to represent.
Sorry, its unoriginal, but its how I feel.
I think designery means, stuff like this http://www.gigposters.com/designers.php?designer=8187
You know, white space. Or pink space depending.
P.S. Scrojo draws well.
Only if you are intentionaly trying to be an ass. Then yes Designery is like drawery and illustratory.
See, for me I started using the word designery because you were so clever as to point out that ALL posters can be considered 'design" Which is true. Very true.
So, use your head and pay a little attention to the style of posters I call 'designery". It is a very specific type. Or you can continue to pretend you don't know what I am talking about in an attempt to make me look stupid. Either way... I am fine with it.
I don't know anything about Paul Westerberg so I don't have anything to say about that.
"At least on the metal/hardcore that some of you folks feel are too "designery" (which is a term with no real meaning as far as I can tell) there are items that actually reference the music."
I don't believe for one second that you don't know what we are talking about hen we say " designery" Unless of course you are a total idiot, which you don't appear to be.
I was being an asshole trying to use Michael's quote from another argument(about the same thing) on a High on Fire poster.
I would totally go see Lucy Lu's Seaside Burlesque Review.
rising son* no worries. i'm actually interested in the debate. more than likely i will pull this and do something more 'westerbergian' but i am interested in how this discussion turns out.
Murphy. You're funny.
Again, at least the metal/hardcore posters you're obviously referencing had something to do with the band. That is lacking here.
It's a fantastic ad for Scrojo...not the best for Westerberg.
The double standard would be that the usual suspects bitch when we see a poster for a metal band that doesn't fit but that we don't when we see a poster for a non metal band that doesn't fit.
I've got like no clue who Paul Westerberg is so I'm in no position to say whether this fits or not.
interesting. yep......not a single direct reference to westerberg or a lyric. just thought i'd try something a little different that would attract an age group/audience we'd be after but.......experiment seems to have exploded in my face.
i have to agree with risingson as well. this illo is *gorgeous*, and the tan lines make me feel pretty funny- y'know- down there. but i see this more for blur or electric eel shock or something.
I think it fits because from what I understand, P. Westerburger is a heterosexual male. This is a naked woman. Do the math.
Aside from that, the simple fact that this is a Scrojo poster makes "RULEZ" or something to that effect the only appropriate response.
Quit buckin' the system!
I can't. I'm not in any way familiar with Paul Westerberg.
If it doens't fir then it doesn't fit. I don't see a need for a double standard just cause it's illustrated.
If anyone can give me one reason that this poster fits Westerberg I will eat my words happily.
At least on the metal/hardcore that some of you folks feel are too "designery" (which is a term with no real meaning as far as I can tell) there are items that actually reference the music. I don't see that here.
That is all.
I bring it up because it only ever seems to arise with Noise Rock or Heavy bands.
I like this poster alot.
But I dont think it REMOTELY fits PW.
Not a bit.
So THIS is who was being attacked by the octopus and squid on Alan Jaeger's posters! Shame Alan kept her covered up for so long, but nice to see she's a survivor.
