yeah, love this one!...early work or not. i do think he should do his text like that a lot more often.
and yeah, he's been cool with me too. guess it depends on mood for everyone.
1994. personally i think this is one of the very best hess posters to date. there are flaws with his work but everyone can improve. if you reach a point in your life where you can't get better at anything...kill yourself 'cause there is no reason for you to be here.
everytime i've talked to derek he's been sweet but everyone has their own experiences and opinion.
i think derek is doin just fine going the way he wants... he has tons of fans, and collectors, and galleries that love his stuff...
and he likes the stuff he does, and has fun... seems like a charmed life to do what you like in art and have to freedom to do what you want and have a roof over yer head and food to eat..
All time greatest Groucho quote:
He was talking to some woman on his game show, and she was saying how much she loved her husband because they had 10 kids, to which Groucho replied:
"I love my cigar, but I take it out of my mouth once in a while"
That and "Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana"
>>>all i know is his art makes me retch and the way he comes off in interviews makes me wanna gouge his eyes. <<<
Damn Seripop!?!?!?
Better have the doctor up your Ritalin prescription or something.
yeah, he is going to debate with Chloe who will endup trowing a tofu burger at his bald head. At that point Marty the manager steps in and will try to break it up but is being stopped dead in his tracks by Yannick who is ramming his big glasses through Marty's skull. Should be great!!
just kiddin'
Piemel, I agree. Everyone slags on Hess...meanwhile, he has a huge, devoted following, he's doing just what he likes, and he's supporting himself doing just what he wants.
All 'success stories' inspiration. There is no ONE road to success and there is no ONE defenition to success. Simply a matter of opinion...
Ditto - "i would have known this was early and not mid or late period work."
I always assume these posters are new unless they're for bands like Yes, or Jimmi Hendrix, obviously old...
i had no idea he was into so much stuff. pretty amazing.
i wish these posters could have had dates associated with them. then i would have known this was early and not mid or late period work.
I think this is wicked cool! And yes, a nice change of pace for Hess. I think the pink is a nice touch. Perhaps a subliminal tip of the hat to the George Michaels and Maralyn Manson jabs at Cops reacently?
The whole layout is cool. I feel worthless as a poster artist when I look at something like this.
I have a soft spot for Derek. The bloke is organizing loads of metal concerts and continiously pushes these bands on his website. I never hear him talk about being better then anyone else. Yes, I can see the point where you wonder if he is adapting or growing his style and perhaps he's not. Sure he has a manager, so what? He is trying to do the fine-art stuff and I think he can rule in that scene. As for his music posters, he has slowed down with those and even the biggest slammers on here admitted that his latest work for Stretch Armstrong and Coalesce was damn good. I like the fact that he is hustling music, gigposters, fine art, local radioshows, speaking thingies at Uni's etcetera and keeps up a great website. Hess signing up for FS2 is a great thing.
This is not 'new' Hess.
This is actually from his early days...mid 90s.
So he isnt 'changing' anything as of late. If anything he's deviated from THIS.
chloe - i agree his ego is really fucking up his art. he can't move past what he's already decided is 'perfect'. he's screwing himself creatively.
but, at least, with this poster, he's trying just a little...
but those colors - YUCK!
this reminds me of the old thin lizzy "scenario" cartoons that jim fitzpatrick did on some of their records. Im not saying hess' style is any way similar, but this type of poster tells a little story. Its better than his dodgy puns.
chloe - i can see yer point. 'yuck' is defintely one of the reactions i first had when i saw this. but then i began to see him trying to stretch out and try something new. give him credit for that. you gotta start somewhere. re-inforced it and nurture him - he might surprise you someday...
Im glad to say that DEREK HESS will be at Flatstock 2. His 'fest' thing is Saturday...but he and Marty signed up Monday nite to be at FSTOCK Friday. Dereks gonna have someone watch his table, Saturday.
Art go to www.derekhess.com
good website (hint hint)
also, Derek will be in Austin for sxsw for his schtressfest at emoe's so come on down and have a chat with him (more hints)
Art-
He does. Check out what he's been doing for the past year. It's almost abstract figural stuff.

this one is sooooooo different for hess. i wish he's draw more of his typography - it looks so right.
but if he could just get away from doing those damned cliches off the band's names for awhile, and interperate what their music means, he'd be much better off.
