tender buttons (k8 and zack from kill me tommorrow) ended up playing the show on the 22nd, which made this an even better show. japanther is one of the best bands ive ever seen.
this poster doesn't look like a FT poster NEARLY as much as it looks like a seripop poster.
yeah, there is a pretty vast scene that revolves around these particular bands and the aesthetic is generally rooted the naive-drawings neo-pyschedelia pop culture detritus type stuff like www.paperrad.org and other sources that seem to revel in their art-school dropout obscurity.
this stuff is starting to come to the surface from the underground, but i think that seripop has done more to generate quality in that sort of work than any of their so-called predecessors.
obvioulsy seripop draws an influence from that scene and so does devon. we all have influences and that's how design/art continues to flow.
the MAJOR problem is exactly what jason said. it's when people get into a stylistic rut. that's essentially why i'm calling attention to devon's imitation and not encouraging it. seripop has created new channels for that sort of work to flow through and people like devon have picked up on those channels.
if new work is simply a pale imitation of it's influences then it stagnates and lowers expectations. honestly, i don't think that the art in the avante-garde noise rock scene needs to be any more stagnent and self-referential than it's already become. that's why i want to see someone with devon's energy and enthusiasm, really try to push the boundries the same way seripop has.
Every artist should rip off every other artist's style multiple times so everyone could stop pissing and moaning and bypass the 'influence' argument completely.
Or quit.
if there where never a ft. thunder, there would still be a seripop. FT's influence on chloe and y is no more of a factor than chantry's influence on them.
seripop's work has evolved into something that is very indentifiable as thier own style. their work is the sum of it's parts and some of those parts are recognizable.
i don't agree with jason's comment that people were doing the same "style" years ago that chloe and y are doing today. there seems to be this idea that even what seripop is doing isn't original, and that's not the case. besides some distance referance to brinkman or chippendale's stuff in their illustrative style, and stuff like mid-sixties french protest posters, i haven't seen anyone make a significant comparison to other artist's work.
yet, when those folks insist that devon's influences are merely rooted in those same influences that have created seripop's style, they sponge the comparison with suggestions that it's been done before.
it hasn't been done before. bottom line is that devon's work has completely changed in a very short amount of time and that quick change isn't the biproduct of an evolution. it's an imitation.
this poster is great but again it looks like a seripop to me. that is my initial impression and first impressions mean a lot.
A LOT of people start out by imitating. it's a fact. the only way to push that evolution is to acknowledge that fact.
look at chloe and yannick's early posters, they are pale reflections of what they've evolved into.
devon's posters are bound to make that transition too at some point, but for now, as much as devon might be a rad guy and have skills, this stuff is still looking like seripop to a whole lot of people.
on that note, yeah, it might not matter what other people think, but this site is a virtual artist commune. there are renowned people on here who have expert knowledge in this medium and really know what they are talking about. sometimes it's worth reflecting on the advice of others who have been doing something that you love longer than you have.
its called a style get used to it...that is why i never wanted to stick to style...it becomes a crutch...this is good for this style though...which has existed for a very long time...even before seripoppers were born.
Im not saying that seripops work isnt unique but I have seen alot of similar stuff. im sick of everyone saying that people copy seripop when they could be copying Deanne Cheuk. or god forbid..doing thier own work.
i actually love seripops stuff, i was just joshing...the thing about this poster is that it works, its not just a blind attempt at emulating someone, its got its own merits..id like to see more people develop their influences and not base a career on trying to look like someone else...but as this poster stands, its okay
fuckin a i dont see whats seripopabout it.
its just bright colors and lots of lines...i dont see how anyspecifc concept is taken from onne of thiers...
i give up.
Chloe, what are you 'UGH'ing about?
Cause it looks like yall's work?
Seriously, is that why? Cause yall should be flattered with this type of stuff...
Dont deter imitation.
HOPE that you'll always have imitators. There are artists working out there who'd give their hands for that...
type aside, if this were by one of the "established" gp designers this comment page would be totally different and y'alld be moseying over to paypal to get ur hands on it within the next 10 minutes
works well i think..its got the obvious influences but its good in its own right, the 3d effect has been achieved well; at least its just not drawn badly for the sake of looking punk...and by that im not talking about seri..im a fan too..
