robschwagerSend robschwager a message :   Now in regards to rippin off COOP, if ya wanna see a real "homage" to the man's "art", check out my Rev. Horton Heat piece. Now THAT was purposely done to show the poster lovin' public that he ain't the only one that can draw hot devil chicks and monster hot rod crap. Besides, everybody in Chicago kept askin me to do a devil chick poster, so I did.
nuff said. Like it or lump it.

robschwagerSend robschwager a message :   more form is one thing... I got no problem with full figured gals. jes more ta love...He just strikes me as a chubby chaser...that's all.....maybe the "hogs" reference was a BIT much on my part. I apologize. Yeah, i repect him as an artist, even if i don't always agree with his subject matter or what he stands for.   2001-11-10 14:03:32
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   Speed first: I dont personaly find Coops stuff to be misogynist (thats a very subjective term) He is one of the greatest inkers ever and he has a full mastery of the female form. His layout and color theory are brilliant. Don't like his subject matter if you don't want to but recognize his skills because he is a STRONG designer. We should take this Coop debate to the message board
Now Trucker: I think it's great that Coop is drawing women that have more form. Fat hogs?
I like this Lit poster.

SpeedSend Speed a message :   Maximum Flouride, Have you ever SEEN a coop poster? Misogyny (?) is the name of the game. Now my pals from firehouse have already put me through the ringer for this one, but this is pretty close to that Coop sexist, big boobed, phallic style that I moved to California to destroy.   2001-11-09 22:57:24
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   I don't think this thing looks at all like Coop. The elements are similar but the style is way different. I like it. I think it's cool.   2001-11-09 21:21:06
peter cardosoSend peter cardoso a message :   People this is firehouse your talking about.Do your homework and you will see the stuff these dudes did in the past and are doing now is fucking classic.THEY ARE up there with the best of the best in there design and the Printing...all I can think of is these dudes sold there souls to the devil to get this good. And if you know you knew what it went into being an artist (poster) or otherwise you would relize sometimes you just give the client what they want so YOU can put food on the table. Hell it's better then crunching numbers behind some cube. Rock on guys!!   2001-11-09 20:03:44
SpeedSend Speed a message :   Aha! I knew it was the fault of the dipshits from Lit (kinda kidding, they are nice guys, but admit it Chuck, that's a band that would do ANYTHING to be popular). One problem I've found on the web is that it's hard to differentiate between computer printed (fiery) prints, which require very little production ability, though the designer might be incredible, and offset and silkscreening, which is an absolute bitch, but well worth the time, because nothing looks, feels, or smells like a silkscreen. Unfortunately, most of us (pposter artists) are lazy and just post an image off the computer, and you can't really enjoy the nuances of silkscreening. Oh, and someone said Coop's typography is weak, well, yer in the black my friend, cause his hand drawn fonts (available to every hack now through House Industries) are asolutely beautiful. Now can we talk about another poster?   2001-11-09 16:43:22
SquirtSend Squirt a message :   Word - D of P! It's fucking great to be back in the States. Firehouse has a killer new shop with kick-ass new equiptment and we're kicking out the motherfuckin jams this year.
By the way - Ron Is the Firehouse Medieval torture specialist. I am Mr. Fuckin Reason Guy. I hold them down and tie them onto a 6' long Diamond frame while Ron beats them upside the head with a 24" squeegie.

SquirtSend Squirt a message :   Chuck Sperry here from the Firehouse. I want to thank Mike Timble for his really kind comments and Speed hit the nail right on the head.
The design for this Lit poster wasn't the first idea I gave the band and the promoter. I was in contact with the band - they are great guys and I've done posters for them since they were playing small clubs and playing the SxSW showcases.
The first idea I worked up was really cool. I did a Jetsons style caracature of the band members floating in space with a space dome concert hall. I had spoken with the bassist from the band and he's a really cool guy and we had a funny conversation about this Jetson idea. But the band didn't like how they looked as cartoon characters. They wanted something more "rock." They said they wanted a space chick with huge tits riding a phallic rocket - and I thought - "well, this isn't really a stretch, but I certainly can pull that off without any problem." You see, I draw sexy chicks too. It's kind of a motif available to the poster artist, y'know.
I won't dignify the Coop comments. He's a contemporary of mine. He specializes in drawing very sexy women and devil chicks. His shit is really cool and he's a right nice feller.
If you take a look at the Firehouse posters posted on this site - you'll see that in addition to posters with sexy women on them - I draw from a wide variety of subject matter and form. Sometimes you just get cornered by the art direction and the deadline starts to loom ever nearer. Especially when you consider, that you can not "just trace" a design but you have to do a pencil and then an ink and then you have to make a film and the color seps (and then print the damned thing).
We did an offset version of this design that was totally sick technically speaking. We foil stamped the lettering and the stars in a process that is usually reserved for small spot color. And we printed a spot silver on the woman's spacesuit. It really pushed the limits of our metallic design concepts and the technical know-how of our printer.
I think that often there is this kind of confusion when you are in the middle of an art movement and you see similarities in approach or style. Is Kuhn like Kozik? Is Emek like Hess? Is Print Mafia like Jermaine? Is Chris Shaw like Alan Forbes? We all dig each others work, are inspired by and sometimes surpass each other in our efforts. We're in the middle of such a dialog when we put out poster after poster in answer to the world around us...

miketimbleSend miketimble a message :   I very much disagree that this poster is a Coop ripoff. If it we're, the woman would be a red devil chick. The Metal Fest piece that is currently another poster of controversy is VERY close to a poster Coop did for a show in Grand Rapids, MI a few years back. Now THAT could be called a Coop ripoff, but not this one.
This piece just has a hot busty chick on it. Sexy big boobed women have been utilized by many a poster artist over the years. Sexist? Yeah, but so fuckin' what? Indy rock and roll is a male driven music genre. Men like looking at hot, well-endowed women. Duh! That's just nature. Coop is not the only artist who has employed attractive females as an artistic subject. Howabout the Mona Lisa or the Venus d'Milo (sic?) or any other naked or semi-naked woman that have been painted or captured on all sorts of artistic mediums for the last few centuries. The female figure IS beautiful and I encourage more of it.
Honestly, as much as a fan for the female form, my favorite posters are tend to be more graphic in nature.
I feel The Firehouse does some of the most dynamic poster work around. Love it or hate it, you can't deny how prolfic and hard they work to constantly push the boundaries of this beautiful medium. Check out their work here and then tell me this sucks.
If people don't like the poster for whatever other reasons, that's your opinion. Cool. But to say it's ripping off Coop not only is unfair to the Firehouse but to Coop as well.

SpeedSend Speed a message :   Yeah, Coop can be brilliant (his lettering) and a sexist nerd who NEVER gets laid. My only problem with this is that firehouse puts out lots of good posters that don't look this tired. I wonder if it was a directional thing given by the promoter or band. I mean, if I ever had to do a lit poster poster, I wouldn't use my best work either. The only time I did a show they were involved with was No Doubt, Lit & Black Eyed Peas (best hip-hop band on the planet), and I just "accidently" left Lit completely off the poster.   2001-11-08 17:31:18
