ShawnySend Shawny a message :   ...it's all one big joke though. not really an argument at all.   2004-11-14 15:42:29

El Negro Magnifico!Send El Negro Magnifico! a message :   This arguement sucks.   2004-11-14 14:49:34
KDBSend KDB a message :   I wonder how Vai wrote hits with DLR without any practical songwriting ability?
Musical knowledge and passion are not mutually exclusive. Ever hear Beethoven's 9th?

ShawnySend Shawny a message :   "Country music is lame."
Agree to disagree. Not saying that in a snarky way, but from this statement, I just know that there's no point arguing with ya'! I wouldn't call Earle country anyway though.

John ASend John A a message :   Like him or no, Steve Earle is real, no bullshit. Vai is a technical "genius" without any practical songwriting ability. Fuck math rock.   2004-11-14 01:36:16
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   I never liked him. Country music is lame.
My dad likes Steve Earle. I heckle him about it non stop. In fact I heckle my dad about most of the music he likes. He also likes Metallica so that should give you an idea of how much material I have to work with.

ShawnySend Shawny a message :   oh snap! seriously though, i think his best albums came right after he cleaned up got out of jail. he's starting to show cracks though, you're right.   2004-11-13 23:47:42
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   Steve Earle needs to get back on the junk. He was far better as a wanna be rock star junkie.   2004-11-13 23:35:36
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   "American Head Punch" Earle wins.   2004-11-13 21:54:48
JephSend Jeph a message :   "Vulcan Death Grip"   2004-11-13 21:26:51
KDBSend KDB a message :   I think John A's girlfriend must've run off with Vai...   2004-11-13 16:01:08
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   Yeah, Guitar Town is great. But I'm more of a El Corazon, Transcendental Blues, Jerusalem kind of guy myself.   2004-11-13 09:04:22
GrushkinSend Grushkin a message :   Vai - I agree w. Fisher
Nevertheless, Earle's GUITAR TOWN is one of the great all-time travelogues.
Earle's recent work does not move me, alas.

John ASend John A a message :   WTF does this poster and/or Earle have to do with that soul-less public masturbating pussy Vai?   2004-11-13 08:55:18
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   "...although he might have peaked a few albums back - may be some time back in the poke would do him good?"
This, I unfortunately agree with -- well, the part about him having peaked awhile back. 'Jerusalem' was fantastic. So were the preceeding albums. The current situation in the US was such a perfect opportunity for him to make a really powerful musical statement. 'Revolution Starts Now' is good...very good even...but definitely a slight disappointment. But still, I love that man.
  2004-11-13 08:35:34
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   "You are wrong." Well, I guess that settles it! Heh.   2004-11-13 08:07:24
john_fuzSend john_fuz a message :   Earle is a fantastic songwriter - although he might have peaked a few albums back - may be some time back in the poke would do him good? Vai is not my cup o' tea but his work on PiL's "album" is some of the greatest shit ever. Shows that he could smoke anyone in any medium. Unfortunately he chose a wanky one for his own stuff.   2004-11-13 06:53:46
Steve HSend Steve H a message :   rocky and appollo creed?   2004-11-13 04:38:46
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   You are wrong.   2004-11-13 00:55:29
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   So yeah, I agree my use of the word 'flash' was maybe misguided, but I stand by my Indiana Jones analogy. Heh.   2004-11-13 00:49:37
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   http://www.stevevai.com/Uploads/1/6/1/STEVElive2000-sm.jpg   2004-11-13 00:44:31
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   Seriously, he isn't. (in my somewhat educated opinion)   2004-11-13 00:42:59
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   I studied Vai as a guitarist. He isn't flash in terms of the theory and technique he employs -- yes, those things necessitate knowlege, and not flash. BUT, the man can not write a tune. Fuck, he isn't even that good of a guitarist.   2004-11-13 00:42:11
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   Saying Steve Vai is simply "flash" is the most retarded thing I have ever read on this site. Pure insanity. AND it is simply not true. Like Steve Earle all you want but if you truely think that about Steve Vai you don't know shit.
  2004-11-13 00:40:40
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   and earle is a better songwriter...words cut deeper than finger tapped guitar solos.   2004-11-13 00:35:02
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   vai is all flash though. it would be like the scene in indiana jones where the dude flashes his swords around all impressively, then once he stops, indy just shoots him. in conclusion, earle is indian jones, and vai is dead.   2004-11-13 00:34:07
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   I don't think Earl is anywhere near Vai in guitar skills. Maybe he could kick his ass, but man he could never outplay Vai. Never.   2004-11-13 00:10:32
JephSend Jeph a message :   "Vulcan Death Grip"   2004-11-12 23:37:48
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   jeph: taking vai over earle is like taking bruns over habs. it is lunacy. earle is a hard man. vai is a wuss. one shot and he goes down. then earle will write a song about it as he does a jig on vai's skinny frame.   2004-11-12 22:50:48
BradSend Brad a message :   earle would kill vai.   2004-11-12 21:24:29
JephSend Jeph a message :   I don't know, Steve Vai has visited with aliens...he might have some sweet "Vulcan death grip" deal goin' on.. My money is on Vai.   2004-11-12 21:11:05
cryptographicsSend cryptographics a message :   It's a mandolin fer chris'sakes! Steve Earle always trucks one out for Copperhead Road. You're right he could kick Steve Vai's butt, easily. You learn a lot in prison...   2004-11-12 21:07:12
whiteyhoustonSend whiteyhouston a message :   yeah, that scene is the best part of Crossroads!   2004-11-12 11:57:59
ShawnySend Shawny a message :   Earle could kick Vai's ass though.   2004-11-12 11:47:44
