I never liked him. Country music is lame.
My dad likes Steve Earle. I heckle him about it non stop. In fact I heckle my dad about most of the music he likes. He also likes Metallica so that should give you an idea of how much material I have to work with.
"...although he might have peaked a few albums back - may be some time back in the poke would do him good?"
This, I unfortunately agree with -- well, the part about him having peaked awhile back. 'Jerusalem' was fantastic. So were the preceeding albums. The current situation in the US was such a perfect opportunity for him to make a really powerful musical statement. 'Revolution Starts Now' is good...very good even...but definitely a slight disappointment. But still, I love that man.
Earle is a fantastic songwriter - although he might have peaked a few albums back - may be some time back in the poke would do him good? Vai is not my cup o' tea but his work on PiL's "album" is some of the greatest shit ever. Shows that he could smoke anyone in any medium. Unfortunately he chose a wanky one for his own stuff.
I studied Vai as a guitarist. He isn't flash in terms of the theory and technique he employs -- yes, those things necessitate knowlege, and not flash. BUT, the man can not write a tune. Fuck, he isn't even that good of a guitarist.
Saying Steve Vai is simply "flash" is the most retarded thing I have ever read on this site. Pure insanity. AND it is simply not true.
Like Steve Earle all you want but if you truely think that about Steve Vai you don't know shit.
vai is all flash though. it would be like the scene in indiana jones where the dude flashes his swords around all impressively, then once he stops, indy just shoots him. in conclusion, earle is indian jones, and vai is dead.
jeph: taking vai over earle is like taking bruns over habs. it is lunacy. earle is a hard man. vai is a wuss. one shot and he goes down. then earle will write a song about it as he does a jig on vai's skinny frame.
