Golden Printing BoySend Golden Printing Boy a message :   I like Jermaine's other stuff a lot better. The type on this is horrendous (why are there mathmatic formulas in italics in the middle of a rock poster??). Just a few adjustments and it could've been a lot better.   2008-02-23 14:30:51

Anything you say will make us think and maybe help better our work but it is not going to make anybody cry and stop making posters. I think all of you tring to defend this and that are the ones stirring up shit.Just let it go. I like it.Or it blows. One way or the other Jermaine is not going to stop making posters. So go blow you horn somewere else and let people say what they want IF they want to say it. Thats my two cents now I'll wait till one of you comes to whine back ya big babys. (Joking jezzzzz!)   2001-10-24 20:52:47

miketimbleSend miketimble a message :   First, before I comment on this poster, let me say that I have the utmost respect for ANYONE who is doing rock poster art. Like everyone here, I don't like every single piece that is cataloged on this site. Some are fantastic, most are good, some, I really don't like. But, knowing the work and effort and lack of compensation most of these artists face, I can't help but respect the vast majority of the artists here. No one likes everything--art is all subjective. But isn't that the beauty of it all? Everyone here can look at a piece and have a different opinion of it--love it, hate it, not care. I do think one has to be careful with criticism. Criticism that is honest and helpful to me is cool. Criticism that is just out to slag someone can be just plain mean. So, my opinion is, if you don't have something nice to say, at least usse logic and other tools of constructive criticism while doing so.
Now, after saying that, here's my view on the poster. I'm not the biggest fan of Jermaine Rogers personally, but one cannot deny he is one of the most prolific and talented poster artists working today. I understand why people like him so much because he's good. This Tool piece is probably the best piece (in my mind) he's ever done. I think he's hit a milestone here. I do agree with bipedalini when he gets frustrated with gushing praise for Jermaine or, if I'm reading him right, any particular poster artist. In my mind, some poster fans (geeks perhaps) fixate on one artist or another and don't take the time or mental effort to explore how many great artists or designers are out there doing this stuff. It's amazing how much great work is being done. This site is doing a great service to show people what is going on everywhere. Traditionally, there we're these regional cliques of artists who all knew about each other--San Francisco/LA, Portland/Seattle/Tacoma, Chicago and Austin/Dallas/Houston. What gigposters has done, is to show that there is great work being done EVERYWHERE! I always knew that there had to be pockets of people in different cities doing good work but there was no way to really track them down. Even now, this site is still missing (by no fault of there own) some of my favorite artists (Jeff Kleinsmith, Steve Walters, Jay Ryan). Think about who else is not on this site. It's mind boggling.
Ok, enough of my rambling. This Tool poster is a great piece and seems to have influence from Mark (Motorbooty) Dancy's work --another artist (from Detroit) who has done some solid poster work and should be on the site.

PediniSend Pedini a message :   I'd like to try and redeem myself in respect to my original message about this poster. Firstly let me say that Jermaine himself has been the most understanding of my comments. He is a gentleman and I apologized to him and only him for what may be construed as an attack. I'm not trying to slag the man. In fact I do have an affinity for his spooky teddy bear images and I've told him so. I also respect him in the highest for his productivity and ambition. My original post was a knee-jerk reaction to the gushing praise of the three posts that preceeded it. I tend to think out loud, but I will restrain myself in the future. I do think that this should be a froum for constructive criticism, whether it be good or bad. So, allow me to be more specific about why I do not like this poster. I am someone who has a love of the line. When you can take the color out of something and it stands on its own as black and white, it is that much more successful. There is something about Jermaine's line quality that is too uniform, which stifles the journey one's eye takes through a piece. This poster in particular is a confusing jumble of uniformity that draws my eye in and then leaves it stranded. The larger shapes of solid black that result detract from the images they are formed around. This is seemingly an attempt to evoke a light source, which ultimately in this poster is ambiguous. There is often a varied rhythm or "meter" to the contents of a successful image, but in this piece it is very stable. There's no action. I've seen Jermaine use color much better than this one also. I'm a fan of saturated color, but I think it works best when balanced by some white or area of mute color.
Well, anyway I thought I owed y'all a more specific critique. I realize sweeping statements like "I don't like it" are inapropriate. As are those of you who tried to impress upon me that someone like Jermaine is beyond criticism. No one is beyond criticism. And if you have thoughts on any of my old shit, have at it!

PediniSend Pedini a message :   Please people, I'm just speaking my mind! It's tuff when all you hear is unadulterated adoration for someone whose work you find mediocre. Shit, I mean, you'd think I called him a foul name! I'm not fucking jealous and I'm not "blasting" anybody. If there is no room for critique on this site than I will be really sad. And phil-a-man, my name is not ben, and I don't know why I should have "cred" to Jermaine's legions of fans to make a comment about his work. I still don't like the poster.   2001-10-23 13:15:44
bobbyclydeleeSend bobbyclydelee a message :   Moving on sounds like a great idea. Where is waldo? I've learned a lot more from harsh criticism then none at all.   2001-10-23 10:53:21
bobbyclydeleeSend bobbyclydelee a message :   I certain subscriber to gigposters recently accused my partners and I of planting someone on line to talk us up. This was an absurd comment and an attack on us.No such thing as bad publicity. Anyone know any great unsung Halloween movies? Nightbreed. Near Dark..etc...   2001-10-23 10:33:18
philaarts.comSend philaarts.com a message :   well first off, if you dont have the poster in your hands id reserve judgement... its beautiful.. the high gloss quality silkcsreen... if you dont "get it" that is one thing, but hundreds of fans cant be wrong... the stuff sells out quickly and never had a customer who didnt like his work.. heck the bands want him to do posters... the defones, built to spill, incubus, indie bands and the list goes on.. so all of these bands get it too.. not many artists get those breaks from such big bands...
also jermaine has never said anything bad on the board here.. why blast him so publicly?
as for adobe.. sounds like you do a lot of stuff on the computer and dont cut rubyliths and screenprint.. heck look at the detail, imagine separating that... and it incorparates the bands new album..
in all due respect, ever hear of player hating..
man i wish you well ben.. but heck, why blast an artist here... u know?
i only am posting this because collectors told me about the post and were pissed off about it... they are like "well what does this dude do?" and ben, i respect your art, but their point is well taken too.. im mean, ur an artist, so why the rant?

tornadoSend tornado a message :   Um...OKAAAY..back to the poster...I love it. Im not oe of the huge Jermaine Rogers fans, but Ive gotta admit that the guy is creative and can draw like bastard. I like this one cause its something different. Wanna talk Photoshop? Hey, look around at all the scanned image posters on here. But, its all good. Everyone is different, so I dont think its cool to take shots at artists on here. Lets please not start that shit again.   2001-10-23 09:11:28
PediniSend Pedini a message :   I have to admit, I don't like it. It's too busy, the line quality is too "Adobe Illustrator". I'm frankly amazed at the outpouring of adoration for this guy.   2001-10-23 07:52:16
