"BUT how is anyone going to understand that without that vital piece of information? without it the poster seems to be right wing propaganda."
The first question people ask me about this poster at shows is "what's the translation of the text on the bandanas?". Seems to me people are eager to make up their own minds. There's no right or left wing statement here. I leave that up to the viewer.
The band loved the poster and it's sold out, so I call this one a success.
I have to be honest, When I first saw this poster I thought it was inappropriate. Just given whats going on in the middle east right now. When you look at the poster it seems to say "Muslim=a bad religion" It wasnt until I read that the arabic on the head bands actually says Haliburton that I realized this a great commentary! it blurs the line of who is and isnt the "enemy". and i love that, and it fits the band. BUT how is anyone going to understand that without that vital piece of information? without it the poster seems to be right wing propaganda. because most people dont make a distinction between Musilm extremists (who are the minority) and the rest of the Musilm population. Never the less the illustrations you do are always amazing and well drafted.
Greg, if you only had a better grasp on color theory you would really get somewhere in your design career. Maybe you should work on being a collagist. ;)
Pretty much the same for me - House of Blues promotions dealt directly with the band on this image and they approved it. I was at this show and they all really seemed to dig it - especially Greg Hetson and Brian Baker. Someone mentioned to me a few weeks later the fact that they don't normally like gun imagery. I had no clue.
i did an album cover and DVD cover for bad religion, of uncle sam holding a gun..for Sony.
then their merch company wanted to make shirts of the art and the band said the same thing, no guns. guns aint punk. so, album cover okay, shirts, not okay..
i like this poster though, great composition and colors..
Waitaminute! Bad Religion was the only band I ever had shoot down a design,... you know what they told me? "Guns ain't punk!"
