just to throw in my quarter...talked to a big wig at AMN the other day and told him about this poster...he said it wasn't cool with the ACL if you use their name, in fact, a few years ago someone wanted to use "Austin Outer Limits" on a poster for Liberty and ACL came down on them hard for it...couldn't do it. Glad you passed through w/o problems, but ya just gotta be careful...
no problem at all and there were a crap load of flyers with exactly the same stuff on it and i asked if anyone had any problems and the answer was no
it was really cool
I did one that says "directly after the ACL Fest" small under the date. Problem with this is it says "AUSTIN CITY LIMITS AFTER SHOW" which it's not. It is a show after the ACL fest. Wilco or Modest Mouse at Stubb's are Austin City Limits after shows. Neko Case tonight is an Austin City Limits pre show. they are officially sponsored/promoted by the ACL organizers.
Slater, I did a poster for a film fest about 2 years ago with the name Zombie by Zombie West on it. (ZXZW) all big on top and Jaworzki & Fitch (SXSW Legal Team) FREAK OUT ON US!!! They had 100 city mashalls line up to shut the fucker down. in about a day of finding out. I just made the poster for some film guys, and I almost got fucked with. I also was going to be on the cover of XLENT picking up friends from the airport from Japan (who got refused to enter the country in Portland cause they busted them w/ merch and tour schedules) So I didn't get the picture of me wearing the ZXZW shirts we made, on the Austin Chron's/SXSW enemies zine. There's way more to the story, but just know this stuff really happens to the nicest people on earth every fucking day.
For the lamest reason($).
no i'm changing it for the flyers but i still don't see the issue
its just stating that there is going to be a show after a show
so if you said a band is playing after a UT game its kind of the same thing right?
Actually, I wasn't...I've done it on several occasions if there was a question of legality concerned...it still drives the point home but circumvents any legal action...
so what about this, alot of other bands in town are promoting their non santioned shows as right after the festival or aftr ACL like i did on the otherone
think that would be feasable?
the posters are just being sold at the gig and printed so i'll leave it as is but the flyers which are printed tonight can change
there ya go... if they have their own official after show or party.. i'd change it up. it's not worth the hassle if they do decide to give you a hard time over it. you're likely to lose more money than you'd actually make by using the name to attract a bigger crowd...
A friend of mine just designed the ACL Fest After Show passes. There are "official" after shows.
Chances are they are too busy putting on the show to even notice the posters and flyers you've done, but living in Austin and doing gigposters here, I'm just sayin' it may not be the toes you want to step on.
rest assured, if you ask, you'll get a "no." find out from another party. i'd contact any promoters you know in another area. that way they're more likely to give you accurate info since you're not competing for crowds. if there's nothing being put on or sponsored as an event after austin city limitsy BY austin city limits then you should be fine because they won't care about the name usage since, in a sense, you're promoting their event as well.
it is a gray area. you should call the acl offices.

i just talked to someone about this and they told me its after a show called austin city limits music festival and its the same thing if you were to promote a show after a band
ie
the pig tailed pixies live right after the furburgers play saturday night blah blah blah
its information
thats like saying you cant use the word austin
i suppose if i worded it right after ACL 10pm would make a difference? no
got ya and the bands said it would be good
i worded the street scene after party on my SD flyers and no one cared
i did ask the question to the bands and they were like who cares and i saw a few other bar advertizing after ACL stuff not connected to the event
meh rules are so hard to figure out, i think it'll be fine but just in case i'll change it
i'll keep the poster the same though
I think the fact that you are wording it "Austin City Limits After Show" is the main problem. Sounds like it's directly related to ACL. (Plus there ARE official ACL Fest after shows).
the flyers for acl haven't been prited yet so if fr sure theres a problem with this then i suppose i can just take it off and replace it with the time and place
i always did this same thing with the san diego streetscene aftershows too and never had a problem i'm pretty sure you can't copy right words but i could be wrong
any thoughts?
They just won't take that lying down. I suppose your going out to the fest to try and pass them out too, huh? Generate a buzz? (no pun intended) You might just hand one straight into the hand of the lawer who will shut this little shindig down with a flip of the cell phone right after you walk off. good luck.
no its not but its after ACL ow are you supposed to bill it? I figure if it you don't do anything with the logog it should be OK
I wasn't even thinking about connor when i did this it just came out now i see it haha
I'd also be REAL careful on using the name Austin City Limits™ if you don't have anything to do w/ them. Unless your show is, of course officially sanctioned then cool!
