I like the idea but it could have been executed better. Along these lines, my buddy Jack did a solo cello show at the Yod space and Coley did a flyer on plain letter paper, with the info on the bottom, and a pack of rolling papers glued to the top of the page. Now THAT's fukkin art.
No, not this tread again! Juvinille Butt is better than this.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....ok, I'm out.
dadaism was dead serious in its way, the "destroy art" thing is about right, it was an antiestableshmentarian (phew) reaction generated mostly by the horrors of the first world war...absurdity was a tool they used, & ultimately they managed to change our definition of art, very cool...
art that incites riots is ok by me...
I've done hand made posters and it's a bitch, but worth it's the effort. I did a 1,000 hand made covers for a single of my band and I loved every second of it. I'm always disappointed when a projects over as I'm a fan of the process. Must have been fun getting this little promotional campaign together.
ur probably right, but do u think zeek helmstein III down in virginia approached this with dadaism in mind? i very much doubt it,he tried his best u can tell. ;-) ps,i'm only kidding,no offense aaron. :-)
i agree with pm,theres a lot of bullshit out there and keeping things simple is the way to go i think. if dada isn't art what is it? anti-art,so therefore its still an artform in itself! in the same way that nihilism is the belief that you don't believe in anything! anyway,we all know the score i'm sure. ;-) :-) :-D
No time to argue the theories dadaism today, but art is an integral part of our lives, no matter how "anti" we want what we do to be. Dadaism is a rebellious teenager trying to be different than the last generation, just like every other generation tries to be different than that that went before it. A simplified definition, but only how I see it from my simplified point of view.
ummm... the dadaists never said what they made was art.
and the whole destorying the elitism of art, that's one of my favorite parts of dada thought... that's why I'd rather my posters hang on poles/in stores/above someone's toilet at home rather than galleries, coz it helps break down the idea of art/design only existing in elite places for those "in the know" or with money
seen, nolen, but to "destroy" art? i always understood that it was more about taking the aristocracy and pretense out of art (which is funny, because in effect, it created pretense.), but maybe that's a very generalized summary of purpose...and yeah, i like this, too. take that, elitists!
I dont' have time to read this whole thread, but I think I've seen most of it, but Harry's comment on Dada being a "piss take" is way off.
They weren't seeing what they could pass off as art, they were out to destroy art. Hell, most people dont' even realize they were an intellectual/philosophical/social movement more than anything...but looking at pretty pictures is easier than reading books, so it's all most people know... it was an anti-art movement... unfortunately the world didnt' get it, and now teaches dada in college art history classes as an "art movement". So it's not a matter of them pulling wool over anyone's eyes, it's people not being able to think beyond "oh it's an object it must be art, right?"
the dada movement was basically a piss take, how far can u go and still pass something off as art that people will still believe its good!same with pop art,all warhol did was screen print some photos and hey presto its art,the gift of the gab is what its all about. honestly guys, dada was a con,a piss take, that was its intention, and the more people that believe its good art,the more succesful the con doth become ;-)
I didn't say I didn't "appreciate" the movement... I just don't care for much of what was produced as art under that label.
Still, this would not have caught my attention and made me want to attend the show.
How can you not at least appreciate Dada? Those artists stole expression back from the privileged elite and made a mockery of the whole notion of what is art. Sorta like what this site does. I like this poster because it's hand made considering the current climate of everything being run through some sort of machine. You gotta like that aspect, at least. I like the idea more than the final product.
i've always kinda liked this. it's ugly. it's badly done. and the typography is totally generic except for the little shifted type with the parens just off a little.
but, this isn't a poster. it's a handbill. right? look at it. it's small as shit. a worthless poster. but as a handbill? kinda cool. totally naive and tactile.
Gotta love the hand made poster angle which is always a grand idea. The Dadaists would be proud. Why wasn't this poster of the week or did I miss something?
i rather thought the point, "old bean", was that it was a handmade piece advertising an electronic performance...talkin about "records & people" on the sticker & all, i thought that was the arty point of it, live electronica, human warmth, blah blah which is kind of a good one, whether or not ya like the execution...
Hate is a strong word, but I must agree that "silly" is a good descriptive word. Art can be anything, but people really look too hard to make somthing out of peices like this in my opinion. It looks like someone put about fifteen minutes into this and has alot of people ooing and ahhing about it's "simplicity". There are people in the fine arts scene that would come over this. With comments like: (in my best Brittish accent) "What does it mean?" or "I just love the usage of negative space." It's ok for that realm filled with turtle necks and fine wine, but c'mon, a gig poster?
what's wrong with this? I'm just curious as to why you hate it so much? I love that it's fucking hand made and shows some real love and concern was put into making it.
What's the comment about "This is not poster "art"!" ? What makes this not art? maybe not the computer generated sticker, but the handcrafted quality of it makes it closer to "art" than almost anything else I've seen on here if that's your gripe.
I'm also curious, does the string spell out "rLF" if so, what's the signifigance? nice to see something for electronic music that feels more organic and less...well same old smae old computer crap.
This total art faggery. Not that there's anything wrong with being gay. This is just silly, what's next in the series? Garbage can lids with stickers on them, give me a frickin' break!
Carlitus, maybe spend a weekend or longer on a poster and have it be krackin and then get beck to me! Im tired of all the poodles!
D Fuck all ya'll! You know where I live beotch!
D
Ok, I wanna hear what would be your ultimate gigposter as well as why! Damnit! No naked chicks (per Herry Irene from UK). Just kidding! "They" need to rot in the glory they set for themselves! Have fun with it and never mind closed mind English folk.
