so true about the old punks/rockabilly thing! Just before I joined the Army I grew my hair all normal and used to grease it up. This was like 1990. The punk rockers made fun of me and now they all look like that... Its worth putting up with some corny ass bands to see a hundred chicks with bettie bangs though!
I dig rockabilly and also '50s rock'n'roll, which is really the musical basis for lots of rad bands, like the New York Dolls, Ramones, Misfits, Flat Duo Jets, Nashville Pussy, Raveonettes, etc. But I just could never get into the Cramps; their songs all sound alike to me.
saw them several times, the first time was with Bryan Gregory and the Buzzcocks opened.
Oh, and they fucking owned errwon with their performance in Urggh.
I remember them in the 80's as a love it or hate em band . Lots of people hated them in SF in the 80's . Almost as bad as the Misfits hate but in a smaller number . Rockabilly though , you don't just evolve into it , it seems like someone makes a decision then boom the next day they have a cowboy shirt and 100 tattoos .
Fucking Nightflight!!! Such an awesome show. For me... it doesn't really matter what Gen. Rockabilly... it's just not for me. I do like Tiger Army though. That'd be the exception. "Rockabilly... where old punks go to die"
Yeah but they weren't 3rd generation stray cats rockabilly like a lot of soundalike crap out there now. I always enjoyed hearing the originals of songs the Cramps did. The Urrgh performance was definitely a standout! Was that on Night Flight or something?
I took me a few years to realize that Bad Music for Bad People was just pure, sick genius. I got into a lot of punk bands from that era, but The Cramps didn't stick right away. I pretty much hated rockabilly & mostly still do. Their weirdness eventually broke thru my hatred.
I agree with perkins. I remember watching that on Cable in like, 82? All I wanted to see was DK but there ended up being so much awesome stuff in that movie.
I wish I could have seen them live. I get all giddy just watching youtube videos of them performing. So much energy and it looks like they're having fun doing it.
I remember watching "Urrrghh! A Music War!" when I was a kid & being creeped out by seeing Lux for the first time. Pale as fuck & sweating, low-riding tights & deepthroating the mic.
