I just started digging on mastodon and have to agree fully with Maxflo on his argument. This says absolutely nothing about them. I can understand the counter-argument but i don't agree. it just doesn't work for the band. *and i am all for making a poster for a metal band that doesn't look "metal".... as long as it works for the band.

I said it before and I'll repeat it. This poster is amazing. I think the art and design are far better than anything I could do. I just don't think it will help bring the right crowd to the gig.

this artist has some cool stuff.. i did notice that the cougars were the client. which is cool.. but a show poster should really defer to the headlining band. even if the cougars say are happy with this, shouldnt it really be if mastadon would like it... most people that will hit this show are for mastadon, not the cougars. or maybe im wrong. or too drunk.

I thought music and going to shows was supposed to be FUN. The Banana Splits rip-off was a natural given the line-up and the colors followed suit. I hope even these "super heavy serious metal bands" have a sense of humor and would like to see themselves represented without the use of "super heavy serious" imagery and colors. "Pink is not metal" - who cares?

mike - i think that this was probably commissioned by the cougers. it suits them just fine. not the other bands certainly. but yeah. look at the last time the cougers and pelican played in chicago together. two different posters. the jay ryan kick fucking ass one - and the cougers cat with a guitar one (which was also very cool in its own right.) he's got all the animals represented here. go figure. i agree - for a mostly heavy bill - the pink cartoon character vibe is not so appropriate, but as a fan of both pelican and mastadon - i also know better and would go to the show regardless. -mt
