or how about the sky river rock festival and lighter than air fair! that was the first outdoor rock festival ever held in the usofa. then there was the piano drop out in duvall with country joe and the fish playing, or cathcing captain beefheart at the tenino festival at buffalo don murphy's ranch.
or judge roy beans' out in roy where the dinosaur club began to morph into the love family and heart was just the house band that played zepelin covers.
as you can see, my living in the past knows no bounds.

I never thought of Badmotorfinger as the co-opted album, actually. (in fact i am listening to their cover of Into the Void right now) It could only get nominal radio play. Superunknown was the co-opted album.
As for the poster. wasn't this the same line-up that someone else had problems with? Can't remember who did the poster - a Chicago guy I think - but it was a little kid eating pasta and the management freaked. Something about how all the bands had to have equal billing? |

of course badmotorfinger was considered their worst effort back home. they had "sold out". they had gone "mainstream". just because seattle had been found out and grunge had been co-opted doesn't make it a bad album. good band, good record.
and there certainly IS accounting for taste. i like soundgarden. i like the songs. i grew up with the record. in my opinion, a good record. doesn't make it fact, it just makes it MY TASTE. 30,000 jaded 40-year-olds still working in coffeeshops in seattle may disagree, but i can live with that.

well, i guess there's just no accounting for taste.
i remember when the band hired a bigshot producer for that record. they spend a lot of label money hiring somebody "good". jack endino (who captured their sound on their first releases) told me he got several phone calls from that producer asking how he did it. the guy would go into a big diatribe about how he used shotgun mikes positioned in the bathroom down the hall etc. etc. etc. but just couldn't quite get them to sound like they did on screaming life. jack carefully told him how he did it -
"well i put the mike down on the floor in front of the bass drum and had the band play into it, dude."
when money showed up, everything went to hell up in seattle. they just went spend crazy and completely forgot about the talent that help make them good in the first place. typical, huh?
badmotorfinger was generally considered their worst effort back home. |

rich -
haha, very funny, indeed!
your crack sort of reminds me back in the early 90's when i was working at the rocket. we came up with the grand idea of havign two switching images on the same cover (we could do that trick at our press) because two local bands were releasing records on the same day our issue hits the streets. soundgarden was releasing badmotorfinger and nirvana were releasing nevermind.
soundgarden said no and was going to pull the interview. "we don't share the cover with nobody, man. we're soundgarden." so, we just went with nirvana on the cover.
the joke was on them, wasn't it.
when was the last time anybody listened to badmotorfinger? |
