fucking cudos alex
with just this little arrow in a thumb i knew it was yours...your style shines right through
damn right i'd stop and look at it!
and from a great illustrator like yourself, this was a ballsy departure...
"It's easy to come up with lengthy BS reasons why it's so great because of its simplicity. Some paying clients would feel ripped off I'm afraid.
Oh well, like you said it did its job. Sorry to sound so harsh."
Not at all. I don't really mind. I am neither proud nor embarrassed of it. It is just a poster that I did for one show.
I would never dream of doing a poster like this for someone elses band!
I think this woulda been great if it were drawn on top of some other image, a photo of something.
Ideally a grainy photo.
The perfect photo, but it still does the job nonetheless.
Hmm. The justification took longer than the poster it seems. Not that the amount of time spent on a poster makes it any better or worse.
On the one hand, I dig the spontaneity. On the other hand, I wouldn't be all that proud of this. Not trying to be rude, it just comes across as zero thought, zero effort. If a student turned it in to my class, I'd make him do it over. It's easy to come up with lengthy BS reasons why it's so great because of its simplicity. Some paying clients would feel ripped off I'm afraid.

The posters I do are all A4 and go up on Dundee City Councils somewhat crowded posterboards in the city centre. Over the years of putting shows on I have noticed that everyone else in the city goes for insanely cluttered posters with stupid descriptions of the bands (as seen on a couple of posters I have done for other people when they have insisted upon loads of text).
As a reaction against this, and in an attempt to get people to notice mine amongst the crowds I try to either complicate matters to an almost unreadable extent (in the hope people will spend a few moments figuring out what the poster says) or do something like this that has barely anything on it.
As an advert for a gig this worked very nicely with over 100 people showing up on the night :)
It took about 10 seconds to do but performed more than adequately.
WEAK!! I don't like posters like this because it's so goddamn simple to do. Sure it works in that simple asthetic but, to me, it's a cop out.
It's like spitting on the sidewalk, taking a picture of it, and then all of a sudden, it's art...
Arggghhh..
