While I think this is a pretty trivial point to argue over... Aren't most of the discussions in the comments section of this site? I mean, when it comes down to it, everything is open to so much interpretation and perspective.
I was probably a bit harsh on Dan in my comments, but I just got rubbed a bit raw by something he posted here. Happens all the time, and I don't think it's necessarily the result of the discussion on art or advertising, but more on personalities. That stuff, you can take it or leave it, as is evidenced by every poster with more than a couple dozen comments on this site.
This one just hit close to home for me. I don't think the Jawbreaker t-shirt design is "obscure" to maybe 75% of the people who would be into this band. The kids who are paying their $10 or whatever to see PGMG are the same kids paying $30 for one of these t-shirts on ebay. It's in the same realm, and hence, I made my comparison from my own personal perspective. I mean, you don't put an image of Eddy on a Slayer poster.
So yeah... in the end, it's a completely worthless argument. It's not the end of the world. It's a fucking rock poster. Maybe some people won't see it the same way, but chances are, a lot of people will. |

ZELIG : |
Reminds me of two things, that episode of X-files with the demon chick who fucks Bruce Campbell because she wants to conceive a demon baby. She drives off with her spawn and "I'm only happy when it rains" is playing on the stereo. The second thing it reminds me of is the three people I have met in my life who made recordings of rain. One was a couple my parents were friends with who just liked to fuck around with their recording equipment. The other two (one guy in college, one chick I met in Savannah) just had different tapes of rain and thunder they had made. The girl even took pains to make a recording under a shit roof (perhaps tin I don't know) at her grandmother's farm. Both of these people were exactley the types of personalities you would expect would do this (i.e. gloomy poet black clothes types).
I looked at this and thought it was just a clever play on the Morton salt girl as some wicked trollop who delights in misery. A pretty girl who makes an effort to cause her suitors discomfort and pain.
Worrying about this fucking Jawbreaker T-shirt seems pretty silly. It sounds like a matter of people having a little bit of trivia and assuming the knowledge of it is widespread when it really isn't. Half the people that have emailed or talked to me about my Citizen Kane/ White Stripes poster tell me how much they love the band but don't understand why I put Bob Hope on a poster. I've met people in college who don't recognize a drawing of Adam and Eve. I've had Jewish friends ask me who the statue of Moses is on my desk (he's fucking holding tablets). Generally, people aren't ever going to get any general knowledge reference in your posters, much less something as esoteric as an old t-shirt design. I don't think that was anywhere near Mr. Keezer's intent. I also think his play on the tagline is better.
These are fucking corporate logos, who cares who uses them when. Nobody has a hold on them. If Seripop does some fucked rendering of the Mobil Gas Pegasus, I'm not going to scream she ripped off Andy Warhol. I bought my Captain Sensible/ Coca Cola shirt and I thought it ruled, I didn't think "What a lame rip-off of Soul Asylum's Can't Feel the Beating tour shirt". Silly, silly arguement. |

Whatever. I was trying to say- "This guy ripped off a Jawbreaker design!!!" because, let's face it, we all rip something off here and there. Just pointing out the similarities.
It's far more irritating to have to read:
"I mean really, she's carrying a boombox, that's brilliant."
It's really not, and either is this poster.
Besides, "When it pains, it roars" is far more clever than "When it plays, I record". If you can't figure that out...

I live in SF, am familiar with Jawbreaker and had no idea there was a mystical connection between the Morten Salt girl, Jawbreaker and this poster.
So I guess I'm the 10th person.
I haven't seen a real live emo kid in SF in many years. Maybe once in a while a flock of them will descend on the Bottom of the Hill when they leave their parent's houses in Santa Rosa, but I never see them. |

Well, geez. I instantly thought two things:
1. Either this is a benefit show for the American Heart Foundation, considering the adverse affects sodium has on the heart, as indicated by the Morton's Salt girl.
OR
2. It's some sort of show organized by Ed Templeton and/or Toy Machine skateboards in collaboration with the Pouges. |

When this poster first came up, I didn't see the band name at the bottom.
I instantly though, "Oh wow someone managed to dig up an old JAWBREAKER poster."
Then I saw it was for another band, and thought "oh they're making some type of reference to Jawbreaker."
I mean C'mon both bands are "EMO" and it's a show that's taking place in S.F. You gotta be pretty dense to NOT make the connection, because 9 out of 10 people who see this poster in S.F. are going to immediately think it somehow has a reference to Jawbreaker.
Not to say there is anything inherently wrong with this poster, I think it's pretty cool, and I like the band a lot, and if I had one I would definitely hang it up.
But symbols and icons usually carry some type of connotation. And within a subculture, you better believe people are going to pick up on it pretty fast.

My point is that this feels like it's referencing a t-shirt design for a band in the same "scene", as opposed to an advertising image.
Right down to the play on words in the lower left hand corner of the image.
