DAMNATION! I had an idea to do something like this for a while. I guess it's really not an original idea anyway.
I can't believe this wasn't traced on top of a photo via computer. If this was done with JUST a typewriter... damn.
i was in the fourth grade when kennedy was assassinated. a week after the killing, a teacher in the school mimeographed off a run of 8 1/2x11 "posters" of a portrait he did of jfk created this way (with his typewriter). underneath it was the "ask not..." line form his inaugural speech. i still have it. i've always wanted to make a poster out of it, but now i guess i can throw it away.
dan: we had an example of this done in an old comercial art instruction book
studied it, figured out what characters they used for what type of shading (8 is dark, 1 is light , 7, 4 , 3 , 6 are all halfway with empasis on diffrent areas) than covered the photo in tracing paper and typed over it
it took 5-6 shots to get it right (write?)
great execution and knowing that is a literary/musical event is so perfect.
Curious as to how you did it? did you break the picture down into blocks of grey values and figure out what number/letter best represented that value???
it's for some friends of ours who do nights of punk rock literature followed by musical acts..
we figured what better way to convey literay and punkrock than doing an illo with our shitty old typewritter.
it's pretty diffrent from what we normaly do.
