If they've changed it's because (hello!?) they're human! and when you get older you start writing different songs. I still think they're the best band in the planet.
And Bono REALLY is a great guy.
We should be so lucky.
A good friend of mine, Pete Rowan was the kid on the covers of "boy" and "war". His brother Clive owned the only skateshop in Dublin which is where I met Bono once. I felt kind of bad for sneering at him when he said hello, he didn't really seem that pretentious. The pubs he owns on the other hand though.....
Nice job Charlie. Was your Helmet/Melvins Ketchup bottle poster based on the same principle? This would fall in line perfectly as that show was not long after the big corporate bidding war for Helmet.
Too funny, wonder if Page or Bono ever got this insidious stunt.
here's how this poster evolved. The first question that came to my mind was "How to do a poster for a band that has let you down?" That thought evolved into trying to pull off a way to "make fun" of the band.Ironically at the time in Houston , and Jermaine will remember this, we had an Andy Warhol exibit, which featured the Brillo Pad boxes.. A picture of that part of his exibit was on the cover of a local news mag on my ddesk at the time. I saw that image and thought BINGO, U2 is more of a "brand" today than a "band" and there was the tool to communicate that.. In addition the great thing about the Warhol connection for me was that I felt it could be a good tool to illustrate "rip off" or "stolen" how ever you want to look at it.. SOme people who are not into art feel that Warhol was a thief.. In a way I felt I could also play off that theme in particular and by using Warhol, I felt I was using a blatent enough tool to get that message accross.. Some people got it others didn't. But I wanted it to be good enough for any real u2 fan to actually want one.. In short, I felt I would have the last laugh by pointing out that U2 in fact were more "brand' than "band" at the same time toying with the idea of "rip off" art like many people think Warhol was.. Which I don't necessarily think Warhol was a "rip off" artist by any means, but that "subject" seems to be frequently debated..I'm happy to see that some people infact got the message..
umm... in all fairness I should point out that Warhol himself stole the design from Brillo Steel Wool Soap Pads... proven scouring quality for over 88 years.
This comes from the Warhol Brillo series, but specifically and directly from a poster Warhol made advertising an art show of the Brillo boxes in Pasedena, CA in 1970. The poster is hanging in my living room (best thrift store find EVER... $2.00). This poster is taken directly from that design.
Too funny Jermaine, first there was the Negativland (SST Records) release "U2". Then the Island records million dollar lawsuit, followed by the SST "Kill Bono" shirts that you mentioned. Then a Negavivland book entitled something like "Fair Use: The letter U and the number 2. Too funny.
Chantry, 'history' is not limited to music. Talkin politics, man. A good knowledge of 'the blues' dont necessarily asist one in campaigning for debt relief for 3rd world countries.
And if you decide to follow through on that 'Kill BONO' thing, let me know...so I can buy up bunches of U2 stuff. I could use the cash.
i read an interview with bono awhile back and found out that until he hung out with keith richards he'd never heard the blues. his record collection began with patti smith. keith and he were sitting at a piano and keith had to show him blues progressions. he'd never encountered it before. some historian.
kill bono.
art
Yea...it was very surreal. And yet, back in 1984, me and every U2 fan in the world just KNEW that Bono BELONGED on the cover of TIME mag.
But, he's BONO...and, love him or hate him, he's gifted with 2 things:
1)A very accessible personality...'charisma, if you will..
and 2)an incredibly profound knowledge of history, which he's used to do some really amazing things for people all over the world. I mean, the 3rd world debt thing...that was pretty impressive pulling that off. SOme of the treaties and meetings hes been able to negotiate between extremist political parties in Northern Ireland are quite impressive.
You know, he idolizes John Lennon...seriously. Its all he used to talk about in interview. And really, not talking about musical output/influence but social activity, hes the closest thing to Lennon in the music world today. He's unabashadly BONO and is brazenly proud of it.
Its like 'BONO' is this institution. He's like a character. I cant help but love the guy.
Ive got an upcoming poster with an image that addresses the whole 'U2' question, namely...'What the heck happened!?' Make fun of me, I dont care...but Im an old-school U2 frak. OCTOBER is one of the most earnest albums Ive ever heard...Oh, Bono...wheres the white flag!?
Its weird, though. BONO is definitely this pop-culture...'thing'. I read in an interview how he wanted to reshoot the photos he did for the article because they 'looked too Bono'. I mean, when you can become a parody of you...that's intense.
I must say I cant watch their videos...the new ones. Its hurts too much.
yeah. these guys lost their integrity long ago... it's all just gloss and facade now. Like, that crap Beautiful Day would have never been on a record as desperate as War or even The Unforgettable Fire.
oh well...happends to the best of em I suppose. If it's meant as commentary on their current status...awesome job.
