i've a huge stack of these things. i think they're one of the worst posters i've ever done. i was toitally embarrassed by it until you guys on gp flipped out on it. now i sellit for a lot of money and i think it's excellent.
really, don't compete for it. like i said, i've got a stack of 'em.
I like it! The Hardship Post were from Halifax...they were signed when Halifax was suddenly "the next Seattle". Good little band. Carl Newman from Zumpano is now the principal songwriter of the New Pornographers.
It does kinda look like a 'kozik' style poster.... kozik did loads of these format posters (including a bunch for subpop) with that kinda layout where you have the label name plus headliner on top and the support acts and date on the bottom.
Its close but like Art said not complete.. Art used different fonts then those that Kozik used around the time, especially the bottom ones I dont recognize as 'kozik-style' fonts. Also the little date text with "sometime in.." is something that I dont associate with something that kozik would do. And then ofcourse Art is doing the circles outside of the 'area' and the 'crumpling' which is something I didnt see Kozik do at all during that time.
Its a cool poster though... I wish these puppies would have been around in the stores where I went searching for posters in 1995. Every weekend I used to go to the same stores and see if there was anything new. Stores like Amoeba in Berkeley (SF one was not opened yet), Artrock and Tilt in SF. Ebay wasn't that big then and ofcourse there was no gigposters. I had no clue what was out there... the only artists that were on my horizon around 1995 when I started looking and digging were Kozik, Coop, Hess, Sparkplug, Hampton and all that BGP fillmore stuff which never interested me. Much later I found out that this dude Chantry was still doing posters. I read about him in the AOR book and some other places but it never 'clicked' in me that he was doing posters until Kozik mentioned him in his first book with that imitation poster... and the circle is round again :)
Gigposters and Ebay have made collecting and exploring sooo much easier then ten years ago. Some of the stuff I collect now would never have been brought to may attention were it not for the interenet. I would still have been collecting Kozik and Hess... (the horror!!!)
punchy - it's from 1995. eight years ago.
someday i'll figger out how to scan slides than i'll fill up this site with my color work (and other folk's color work, too).
i love it art. the layout reminds me of your other poster with the bend in the middle. i feel a little bit of the kozik flavor (colors) but i see alot more of the chantry swagger on this. Someday i will develop a swagger. I need to go through your whole collection again.
that's the way they gave me the info. they said they'd get the dates to me later.
it's always very dangerous to give me info like that, cuz i'll put it in. cracks me up.
if you guys remember a while back there was a poster by kozik where he was trying to do a "fake chantry"? well, in response, i did this as a "fake kozik" (i even signed it 'art chantryzik'.)
of course, it doesn't look all that much like his work (closer than his fake of me), but i couldn't help fucking it up. i figgered the whole idea was fucked up, so i went into what i had finished and wrinkled it up and tore it up and whatnot. then i slopped on the color as fast as i could. then i cropped it all stupid.
intentional "bad" poster. go figger.
its not die cut around that image.. the one i have it sorta goes small to large widthwise.. measuring 9" at the bottom to about 10.5" at the top..
the one i have the top edge is cut on a slant going from left to right.
and the circles are actually cropped off on the edges.
