Scrojo***** I don't really understand what you meant by the first part of your comment to me, so i'll disregard it because you pretty much reiterated what I was saying with the rest of your comment, the fact that you revamped the adicts image proves my point. Also like you said too - punk IS profit, therefore a poster is advertising.
This poster does not 'say' punk bands to me, so in terms of properly marketing what it's supposed to be selling, it does'nt work as well as it could.
Ragnar - your explanation makes perfect sense in a creative way of thinking, but i still have a hard time justifiying the disregard of proven, tried and true imagery which would help this poster (ad)
sell the bands as well as it could (even for 999).
What i'm really trying to figure out is where people do (or should) draw the line in terms of promoting their style versus whats right for the band or project.
Mr. Gink - you provide words of wisdom, always.
The bottom line is - anything that involves promoting or selling a product, band or gig is advertising, and there is such a thing as good and bad advertising. If you think otherwise, then fine art is your field.
On a final note, my statement about this being "illustration masturbation" was pretty retarded so I apologise ragnar. Your work is great, just not similar to the way i approach a project that sells something.
This is an on going discussion.
I always try to incorporate the vibe of the band into my work...that being said...which is more important, capturing the image of the band, or capturing the attention of the veiwer? Does this poster detract from the image of the bands? I don't know any of them so I couldn't say. But I dig the poster, and it would stop me if I saw it hanging up.
My opinion on the importance of capturing the vibe of the band...I do it more for the person that might go to the show than for the band itself. Although it goes hand in hand. I wouldn't do a Roth fink style poster for a light jazz band. It's just not good advertising. BUT, I'm not being paid by the band to do the poster, I'm being paid by the promoter to get ticket sales. If I'm to be 100 percent conscious of the bands branding efforts, then the band can hire me. So given that, while I always try to get the vibe of the band, I don't stress over it.
But that's me.
And for what it's worth, I like the type. I think it fits the illustration style nicely.
first off....
amazing illustration! color me beyond envious! i truely wish one of these bands were 'up-n-coming'. this could easily be an 'icon' for future consumers.
*hynes: hate to shit in your froasted flakes but.........i 're-vamped' the joker/monkey-head logo for the addicts 3years ago so they could do tshirts and posters (which they did ) and....never got paid.
....profit before punk.
As far as the adicts go, sure the clockwork thing is old, used and stolen, and any designer would try to come up with something else, but the bottom line is what works best. Is the adicts joker head and logo the most creative way to approach this? No, but it is imagery that is unmistakable to fans, therefore I think using these devices is the easiest way to tell fans that the band they want to see is coming. Its instant recognition which in this day and age is king.
I'm in a band..and I would be damn proud to have this represent me and the boys even if it had nothing to do with our "image"...image is for those who lack in substance or talent...a gimmick, if you will...ie...Marilyn Manson, Kiss, Genitorturers, Impotent Sea Snakes..whatever...sometimes the spectacle is all you've got and thats just crap. :!:
fuck image...cool is cool...besides, that stolen clockwork orange meets the joker thing is so overdone anyway...I would go to this show...I would skip the bolo-hat extravaganza in a heartbeat....it leaves me with nothing more than rolled back eyeballs.
All the bands have been around forever. The Skulls just released a new record after many years, and it smokes!
Anyone in SoCal would associate this immediately with Dr. Strange and know what was going on.
Fair point, I remember 999 did headline this show, however both bands (and mad parade) have been around for a long time. They are english and they are punk bands with a lot of clout in that area of music. I think at least some essence of that should have been factored into this. I would not even guess this was for bands playing punk rock. Thats where it fails, it doesn't communicate what type of music these bands play.
I don't think it necessarily portrays something that is counter-productive to any of these bands' "images". It doesn't even look like the Adicts are headlining, so it would seem a bit unfair to use some joker image and discount the rest of the bands on this bill.
This would get asses in the seats, and it works in with the Dr. Strange label image, who it seems are promoting this gig. It's completely consistent with his thing.
A good point but not a new one. Its a good "drawing" but not a good solution. On further thought, I can see a vague link with the large figure being dr. strange, who's label now deals with the adicts, still not enough though. I know the adicts well, and how much effort Pete puts into keeping the adicts image going. It's what has always made the band stand apart and helped them sell records.
This irks me. While I agree the illustration style is superb, It has absolutely NOTHING to do with any of these bands, not a link. Its purely illustration masterbation. It 100% missappropriates the bands and the legacy(s) and image they have spent the better part of 20 years creating. I did a poster for the adicts and made damn sure I represented them and their image as best I could. It boggles my mind how many people overlook the importance of proper representation when designing a poster, or commenting on one.

Amazing illustration. So clean... Type is a little weak, but let's face it, if you can draw like this, who gives a fuck about type?
