I'm glad y'all like this one, I'm not happy with elements of it, but...
Inspiration comes from all over, Dave. Sometimes its hard to tell. I mostly am emulating the modern comic artists that have corrupted me from early on. (Worden, Bagge, Clowes, Sutton, and all of the 'youngsters' like the Ft. Thunder guys) It actually hinders my flexibility as a designer, because some people just don't like that stuff. But I am OBSESSED with that form of imagery, which is weird because I don' make comics. For most of my adult life I've considered my art as an attempt to take that influence and make it my own, on my own terms. I'm also influenced heavily by all of the beautiful lithograph theater posters from Europe over the last half-century.
Blah, blah... and I'm inspired by weed, I have some killer shit right now. :D
I can't wait to see this show. The last time I saw Dirty Three was in Providence, and at the time the population was not too savvy about bands like this. So, there were about 30 people there. Bad for the band, but good for us who did show up. They performed like they were at a packed stadium. Unbelieveable!
Ok, for now on I'll just make posters with helvetica and only the most generic clipart. Would that appease you Jeph?
Now that I look at this, I printed the pink too pink. (this is the digital version) I was hoping to convey something about the "punkification" of a traditionally un-punk instrument. And I mean Dirty Three are punk in the best definition, they defy classification and stir up some fabulous chaos.
My wife thinks it makes them look "gay."
