art chantrySend art chantry a message :   it's full color. it's on the last page of the showcard section of the art of rock. you can see it for yourself. that old showcard of the beatles with the green fullbleed split fountain was mine, too.
this one was around 18X26 or there abouts, if my memory serves me. the guy i got it from found it were it had slipped behind the counter of an old drug store he was demolishing.
the real secret history of american graphic design is the story of the sign painters. those guys are true enheralded geniuses.

rotodesignSend rotodesign a message :   This is a real beauty -- that they managed to cram all that (hand-lettered) type on there and still have it jump out is impressive. I'd love to see more stuff from this era on here. Is the original in b&w?   2003-04-12 10:09:40
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   this is a b&w photostat of a full-color vintage poster i used to own. 'cps' is now 'ups' (for those who live in the nw). it's so old that chuck berry has low billing and had just released "roll over beethoven".
i loaned it (and a shitload of others) to paul grushkin back in the mid-80's to photograph for his first poster book (art of rock). it's in there, along with a mess of other vintage stuff i sent him - included one of those early beatle posters. he never returned any of it. i pressured him for a long time and i finally managed to get him on the phone and all he would say is "they're gone". no apology, no acknowledgement that anything was amiss. nothing. ever.
in the mid-90's, when i was selling off the dismal remains of my vintage poster collection, i had several collectors tell me they'd happily have paid between $8-10,000 for this poster. one guy said he would have gone as high as $12,000.
for all you people who thought i was being a real jerk to paul and being unecessarily harsh in my dealings with him, i hope you now have a slightly better appreciation for why. i also want you to there are many many other collectors and artists out there who have similar feelings about him.
