my "poster on a tshirt" looked like a tshirt.
if i had ripped the sleeves off and cut off the collar and hem, it would have passed as a poster. as it was, everybody saw a tshirt. period. i show it to people even now and people say, what a nice tshirt. i entered it in design competitions alongside really wild out there work and the judges say, "it's in the wrong category. it's not a poster, it's a tshirt." when i enter the poster on a record, they say, "cool poster!" i don't how many i can try to explain my point, but i can do this all day.
if this book were printed on the open pages inside and nailed to a telephone pole spread eagled, then it would be a poster - a really wild poster, but still fucntioning like what we (as a culture has agreed upon) call a poster.
see my pint? the basic function./cultural definition has of a poster has been lost. it's not just (as ghost would have it) whatever we want to call a poster. we have to AGREE that it's a poster.
and this is a book. no question in my mind.
John, I can see "4-18" in the thumbnail on my laptop across the room. Granted, there isn't much info on this... but I know well enough to NOT think that this was promoting a new album coming out or something.
looks like a record to me albeit a picture disc. only on close inspection do I see that it is actually an advertisement. but what do I know, I'm not wearing pants.
I see your philosophies on that. You see this and say, 'yeah, this is a show I want to go to just based off the art alone'. The book takes more investigating. I mean, they ut it in all the right places so it didn't become TOO far outside normal 'reality restrictions'.
wow! this thread has exploded. it's about we had a discussion with some sort of substance n gigposters. thanks ghost!
but, where is frank? he needs to come on here and ruin everything with a few choice remarks.
nobody sees a record, they see a poster. upon close examination, we see that it's printed not on paper but some other thing - a record.
when i look at this book, i see a book. nothing else. just a book. upon close inspection, i see there is an advert printed upon it. unless it's the title, which is what our agreed reality would dictate.
you can push definitions (these guys sure did) but you can't always get the rest to agree upon it as a reality (it's still a book. just like my poster turned out to be a tshirt)
we agree upon our realities.
cody.... it wont show you the winning max bid for...
so he might have overbid you with $100 for all you know
there are programs out there (snipe programs) that allow you to bid at the very last moment (say 3 seconds before the auction closes)
ebay is actually pretty solid on the cheating front
do you mean that a program would go as far as it's needed to get the auction?
if so, that may be why someone just get one of my recent posters for 64€ :shaking:
lol, you can bid more than 1$ more and it'll only increase the price of 1$ each time someone's trying to overbid you until it gets to your maximum bid amount, that's not a special program that's a regular ebay feature (i don't really know if it sounds clear)...
how much did that one gone for?
Yeah, I got outbid on this Mosrite guitar body from the 1960s that I'd been tracking down forever with 2 seconds left (I was even sittin' at my computer refreshing the page to try and outbid any outbidders). About you losing by 1 dollar though...Couldn't the high bidder have bid $100 over your bid, and it would still come out as just $1 over. I mean, his high bid would be $100 over you, but his winning bid would only show as $1 over. No? Anywho, I hate last minute bidders...unless they are me, and I win. Ah E-Bay, will you ever learn?
people i know who are professional shoppers on ebay use a program that will auto-bid exactly 1 dollar over any bid amount. don't know what it is or how it works, but it gets really hard to beat.
I just lost this on Ebay yesterday, 1 dollar over within the final minute...what I'd like to know is How did they know to bid enough to get 1 dollar over me? I suspect foulplay...I love this poster though.
a long time ago, like 17 years.. i did street teaming for about 2 years.. never want to do it again.
but chantry always talked about the importance of promoting the show to the hilt, as that is what they posters were for... and even more so back in his heyday.
so how do you hang these lps? how many hit the streets?
that was my grandpa story of the day.
what's ironic, is that most of 8balls critiques are spot-on correct.
Chantry has done a few really cool pieces..like those fastbacks comic panel things, but by and large, his work is..ok.
I KNOW he's 'important' because he was ike in the right place at the right time..but heres the deal..apart from say..the Spook em Bowl...where is the 'icon' the 'good year'?
taint there.
y'all have taken his 'gimmick' hook line and sinker.
shit..there's a REAL 'art chantry'....
his name is Mike King..same 'style'..but 1 million times better, longer production time, cooler bands, funnier jokes in the posters and super -productive UNTIL THIS DAY.
Chantry has this whole stale marxist claptrap 'dialectic' behind his work about blah the designer makes the world better..
whatever
kiss my motherfucking high ass.
his shit is OK..but it don't
get my pussy wet.
hate away all you design fag sycophnats.
The funny thing about all this crap is that Art Chantry has done the EXACT thing I did to him by ripping people new assholes CONSISTENTLY and hardly anybody calls him on it because "he's talented" or "a legend" or "been doing it for 30 years" but when someone ELSE does it to him, all of a sudden it's a big deal. Of course, half my comments don't make sense...Art's don't either. That's the whole point. It's all ego-based, wrapped in insecurity and disguised as "advice". That's such horseshit.
I like some of Art's stuff and I don't like a majority of it. That's fine..it's called opinion...and everyone's should be respected. What I have a problem with is when someone goes beyond "constructive criticism" to look down on people, and talk shit. If that happens, hey, it's fair game.
And in regards of the comment basically stating that I can't say shit since my art is nowhere comparable, is so fucking stupid. I have an opinion (like everybody else) and I choose to use it. Artistic popularity doesn't automatically 'entitle' you to an opinion..being born does.
Artwork is always subjective..people like it or they don't. But in all forms, I feel it should, if anything, be respected as something that someone spent time on and created.
If Mr. Chantry wasn't such a jaded old fuck, then these comments wouldn't be here. Consider it an experiment in double standards, and as far as I can tell, it worked.
Cheers!
I hate everyones work. Everyone. Everyone's poster art and design work sucks. All the Texas guys, the Chicago clan, the Northwest, the SF cats, the LA guys especially. Especially Grealish! Everyone before me, all poster artists/designers. I looked at every jpeg on this site in one sitting and they all blow out my ass with sheer velocity. Including mine. Tara sucks, Kozik sucks, Art sucks, Arminski sucks, Kleinsmith, Factory Twenty seven etc... If I had it my way I'd ban poster art. Everyone blows! Hee hee, haaaaaaaaaaa. :o :D
:o "hey someone can hate something and they don't have to be better " - seripop
chloe - you had the exact opposite sentiment when i didnt like ONE of your posters.
i guess i am an exception.
hey someone can hate something and they don't have to be better
but to post OVER and OVER that somebody has no talent.. well is opening yrself right up.
there is alot of t stuff i don't like that is well done and the person is obviously good at doing thier thing, it's just not my thing.
taste and talent are 2 diffrent things.
even if u dislike something it's often easy to see why others might like it
anyway that's all i have to say.
How good 8Ball is has no bearing on his opinion. He can think what he wants. People of varying degrees of skill make all kinds of comments about artists of varying degrees of ability all the time. i don't buy the fact that you need to be better than somebody to dislike or ctritque their work.
That said I think 8Balls posts were more about his anger with Art and less of an actual crit. I could be wrong though.. only 8Ball knows.
yes he obviously has a problem with Art. I undserstand you being pissed about that 100%. I totaly get that. Thats why I asked.
no matter what you think about chantry posters or even the man himself...picking out dozens of chantry posters and trash them with 'witty' remarks aint cool... furthermore 8ball is making a fool out of himself by obviously missing some information that was available in the comments. I couldnt care less if someone doesnt like Chantry posters... taste is a funny thing but this whole jihad thing by 8ball is ridiculous
i think he's a dick cause he was trolling on several of art's posters
ok so he doesn't like art
big deal
why make a huge issue out of it?
i'd have said something no matter who was getting trashed
a nasty comment on oneposter, ok fine
but why start shit on every poster by a certain artist?
i looked at 8ball's site and i don;t think his work really gives him the advantage on too many other artists on here.
I don't think it rules. I am not a fan of Chatry's work. So now you can go ahead and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
If you have an issue with 8Ball about being an asshole thats one thing but if your just fighting him about his opinion, then you know ... thats totaly lame.
one thing... i kinda wish the type 'wrapped' better around the bullet. the way it is now, it makes the bullet look kinda 'angular'. could be a bit dirtier to match the swiped image too... okay, so maybe it doesn't 'rule' but it's still pretty good.
You think you're smart but you're really dumb so there.
Oooh Oooh look at me! I've used an archaic type designer as my nom de plume. I'm so clever.
Shut up.
Another rip-off. GENIUS! Not only does the typography suck, the poster looks like a record...A hopeful wish by this hack..Stick to laundromat flyers, my friend!
all i can really tell you about the lp underneath is that it appears to on epic. it came from my old lp collection when i piled up so much, i had to thin it out. some of these lp's were junk, others were extremely rare and valuable records. i remember i even tossed in an original copy of The Sonics "here are.."
it's glow-in-the-dark ink, by the way. that's why it's so transparent.
