i was completely inspired by hess's work back when i was a teenager. most of his illustration is great. i don't have a hang up about the guy's work.
i just can't buy into this idea that he's some sort of master draftsman with an insane sense of the human form, because he's not. AND there's nothing wrong with the fact that he's not. it's not hess that bothers me, it's the folks that talk out of thier ass about his work, good or bad.
I thought you were leaving.
Did you come back for your rattle?
Seriously Steve, what the fuck?! I wasn't even directing my comments at you...they were to anybody spending their time bagging on the dude when they should be more concerned about where their own work was headed. So his stuff looks like Hogarth. So the type isn't the best. Who fucking cares? Is he going out of his way to take money out of your pocket? Did he beat up your dog? Then I might understand........
I like your work a lot Steve. I admire the fact that you spend that much time on a single piece....I wish I still had the patience to do that kind of work. There's also a lot of artists who stuff on here I think looks like total shit. But I realize it's a waste of my time to endlessly bag on it.
You know why he doesn't get burnt at the stake? Because he doesn't come on this site acting like he's the shit....the small interaction that he has had on here has been professional and full of respect.
I don't care how great of an artist you are, if you act like you are God's gift to the world, you lose respect points in my book...I mean c'mon, all we really do is put pencil to paper or ink on paper...it's not like we are saving the world or anything.
I'm not a huge fan of Derek's work, but I have to admit to being inspired the first time I saw it, because it was different then the typical rock poster...I guess I just don't understand why so much focus is put on trying to tear the guy down, when he is just like any of us - trying to make a living doing art and unlike a lot of us, me included has proven to be very successful at....that's inspiring to me.
Go focus on some artwork you like.
like i said, we can go back and forth on this forever. i brought up the Louvre thing just to point out that no matter what we all think, in the end, he's getting some pretty fucking major props in the REAL art world.
like it or not.
not that that makes his art "better" to everyone or anything like that.
theres a difference between disdain and observation..ut ah! now I'M being observed, and the mere fact that im commenting on this and saying the truth means that im jealous, i must hate hess, i must think its bad, even tho ive said i dont think that..i must hate him because im spending way too much time on this particular topic...anything else uve got lined up? oooh i bet he thinks hess has an animal fetish too....and oooh, now he's said that, it must mean that HE must subconsciously have one!
Wahoo? Yes and no: Clevelanders have a love/hate relationship with our racist iconography. I think people stopped protesting at the games cuz the fans spit on them and tried to fight them too much. And the protesters were in a little pen.
If it was a topless bodybuilder vacuuming a toilet, holy shit, that'd be funny. Derek Hess: Promoter? AWESOME. Who brought JESUS LIZARD to the Euclid Tavern? I'm pretty sure it's because of him I saw Mt. Shasta, too. Not so fond of ZAO, but he did his part for influencing the Clevo Music Scene in a huge way. But as I said before, this ain't about his work with the needy...
I feel Jake on this one. I mean, I had to look at Derek's stuff for ten years. It was all over Cleveland for years and years. It's just overload to me anymore. It all looks and feels the same to me.
The thing that has always bothered me though is that I never ever saw a single screenprinted Hess poster hanging up to promote a show. Tons and tons of legal paper sized xeroxed flyers, but never a screenprinted piece. All that stuff was for collectors, not for promotion- and that's always bugged me.
Otherwise, I can't knock the guy. He brought tons of bands to town, and has done his thing for a long fucking time. I doubt he gives a fuck what anyone thinks of his stuff, and why should he? Some people like it, some people don't.
I hope he does have something in there. I mean think about it, thousands of people see the Hess everyday they look for more on the web or where ever, they see he's connected to poster art, they find kozik and coop and others, and before you know it they're looking at my stuff.
It would be a good thing for everyone if he had something in the Lourve.
I just received a book about the work held in the Louvre. I did not come across any Hess. This is not the final word on the subject though. Heh. Seriously though, imagine how funny it would be to go from the Venus, to the Mona Lisa, to Hess. Somebody make it happen?
hey slater.....this is taken from his website:
"Chances are youíve already heard about Derek Hess, or if you donít know his name, you have seen his work. Working with some of the top names in the Hardcore/Metal scene, being featured in many prominent publications such as Time, and displaying his art at venues as illustrious as The Louvre and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Hess has certainly made his work known..."
I'm not on any high moral horse. I'm just saying don't call people out on shit that you yourself do.
i have varying abilities my friend.
and im callin this out because its reached a level of reverence that is to me, erroneous.
ud be so pissed if ud spent a month making ur new masterpiece for a band and then in the end theyd decided they wanted one of dereks puns instead.
hess is accesible and appeals to a lot of nu metal kidz, he's good at that, credit where its due. but its safe....maybe its more a case of tried and tested...
i have to agree with jkelly, theres better stuff on here.
good luck to derek, not that he needs it, but i wish him no ill
I'm not on any high moral horse. I'm just saying don't call people out on shit that you yourself do.
I really don't care if people like Hess' work or not. I think the reasons usualy given are pretty silly. Like, samey, puns or bad type etc. He's hardly the only person who is guilty of these crimes. HARDLY.
If I have to start pointing out other people who get smoke blown up thier ass about how fantastic and inovative they are in spite of puns, bad type or sameyness I will. It's just ridiculous.
I just woke up. Hanging in the Louvre doesn't make something good. Hanging in the Louvre wouldn't make someone better abled to critique something, just like being in a band doesn't make you better suited for critiquing music. Lack of imagination was brought up earlier, and yes, that's right on the money. How about "worst REVERED poster artist of the 20th century"? Maybe it's a Cleveland thing, this intense dislike of the man's work. Ryan August, care to back me up? His shit is EVERYWHERE, they wrap hot dogs up in it a ballgames, it's on bus stops, it's fucking beaming out of sewers. You may not have even noticed Creed the first time you heard them, but after it was shoved in your face for 12 days straight while you were strapped to a chair, it started to get under your skin. Jealous? As jealouse of Hess as I am of Creed. Tons of money would be nice, but if it meant I'd have to release turds like this daily, it wouldn't seem so great. I respect people that really take time and effort and thought when making a poster. There's something heartening to me about people who really put their heart into something that ends up in the club's trashcan or disintegrating in a telephone pole. Really caring about semi-disposable art, y'know? At the very least, TRYING... Hess' quicky toss offs are leagues beneath SO much of the other posters on here, it's a shame.
i just think as far as cleveland goes jake kelly's work is more thought out , interesting and well suited to the bands.
ONLY ,Y OPINION OF COURSE
i can totally understand his frustration
i AM jealous of jake's creativity and awesome line work and wicked hand lettering
mike, it is samey...call my stuff samey aswell if u like, sure i do a lot of 60's style psych stuff, but not always, i can do other stuff.. as anyone can see theres more variation in my relatively small portfolio than incorporating a literal pun played out by roughly sketched gym freaks with their shirts off for practically every single poster i do.
its just observational shit, dont go getting on the high moral horse just cos im the one thats sayin it, its samey wether someone says it is or not, and its in the louvre.
thats why it gets picked up on.
dont shoot the messanger.
Actually, after all this time, I'm finally convinced me that Derek's work is overrated and terrible.
I don't know why it took me this long to see it, I will immediately stop enjoying and respecting his art.
its cos he's big and famous at the same time as not necessarily having the versatility and range that u'd expect from a well known artist, especially one in the louvre. thats why he gets picked up on, cos he's mainstream, but not particularly fertile in imagination, scope, or concept. its difficult to point out these things without being labelled jealous; i'm not jealous, i do what i do,derek does what he does, good luck to him. i just dont rate him as highly as all that, thats all..
Fish said that.
I just find it amazing that theres no shortage of people willing to talk shit about Derek at the drop of a hat. So what if they're not all ground breaking concepts with only the finest type and layout.
EVERY poster Y'all make is the greatest??
It's like he killed everyones puppies or something.
dont be silly murph, i dunno how being in the louvre automatically makes the drawings any better than what we can see on gigposters.its not bad, i dunno about ppl bein jealous, but it IS very samey..personally i got nothing against em, they DO look good, but samey...good at drawing but wheres the imagination? it stretches as far as drawing a guy with a helmet on for a helmet poster
i have respect for hess but i don't think that he's a master draftsman by any means. his style is sketchy comic book art, completely off anatomically and perspectively. it's totally cool with me, it's exagerrated, that's what comic art is all about.
i've seen this same sort of stuff in figure drawing classes.
the punk rock bbq has moved to head hunters every Saturday from 4-8 starting last week
here the poster
and here is the lineup for this Saturday
4pm built for speed
6pm hit by a car
7pm blood of patriots
its a good time, cheap drinks, free bbq and 4 dollar cover all benefiting the sims foundation which helps raise money to provide mental health care to musicians who need it
come on out for some fun and support a great cause
this is what i don't get
He could make wicker baskets, they'd probably be sweet. Show posters? well...
In retrospect, I shouldn't have even gone into it cuz upon further inspection this whole thing has been hashed out a zillion times in Hess' comment section things. I still prefer the "YARR SALE" poster, but to each his own.
i have mixed feeling about hess's work
he does have a distint style that i love and highly respect but i'm not sure if it translates good into posters
art pieces HELL YEAH
posters not graphic enough and weak for composition and hard to see in a club
thats my opinion
he has a clothing line out right now that rules
that's fucked up.
i dont like his posters really very much at all, but i have always REALLY respected his drawing abilities as far as the human form goes. and his style.
i wish he would branch out ALOT, but whatever, he's making a name and making money doing his thing.
end of story.
I hate when a Derek Hess poster pops up. STRICTLY SPEAKING of his ARTWORK ONLY (not his business sense or his work with the needy or the dude himself or anything else...) he's only gotten lazier and looser and more careless. And from what I understand he gets more assistants and gets more removed from his own posters. Strangely, this is (i think) his "first" poster, and it's a load of shit. Slapdash figure at a weird angle that somehow incorporates a visual pun on the bands name. BRAVO! Now do that again 5,000 times! One of the worst things about Cleveland is the fucking Derek Hess posters. Is that Mr. Peanut moshing poster up here? I'll check in a minute, but first let me state clearly that in my opinion this dude is one of the worst poster artists of the 20th century, and I'm including in that statement every unknown "LOST CAT" and "YARD SALE" poster "artist" (even the one who made the sign that said "YARR SALE" I saw a few months ago). ..
Then again, can 50,000,000 Hess fans be wrong?
cool. I'll get some 'slit' wraparounds and be all aggressive while I pound out a tune. Lots of
black electrical tape too.
Ever see the SCTV bit with the fake punk band 'The Queen Haters' ?
THAT"s the vibe baby.
ripping off is a little harsh of a word, i mean, geez, 99% of the posters here probably rip off one idea or another. inspired, influenced - that's more what i was thinking.
just saw the line of Ride snowboards hess did some work on, pretty awesome.
Who's the artist that HESS is ripping off all the time? Some guy from France or Germany that lived a century ago. i saw his stuff in an art site recently, and i coulda sworn I was looking at a Hess sketchbook.
