i like this poster. if the type at the bottom had been worked differently, it could've been better. sure, mucha is great but no one is really above pop art appropriation. look at warhol, doing multi-color silkscreen editions of "The Last Supper".
I put this one on here because I myself thought it was pretty bad and wanted to hear your criticisms. I'm not sure who did it but it was being sold by a poster website for $35, so I wouldn't feel that bad for the guy.
I'm no Mucha, but I know how I'd feel if someone threw a gradient on my line art and stuck it on a counting crows poster...
So anyway, this was made over a year ago, and if this was their first attempt, they've probebly done a few since then.
true, "sucks ass" is not constructive criticism. . .as for artists of the 60's & 70's that borrowed from Mucha. .ummmmm..well I don't see any validation in that. . how did they use it? Did they sample or steal? I guess we could "bust chops" on an individual basis. As for this current use of Mucha I think that many would agree that the usage shows neither a sense of authorship nor a valid connection to the subject matter.
but yeah, sucks ass is not helpful. . .although you can speak emotionally as well as ahhhhh...whatever.
Umm, lots of the late 60's early 70's artists borrowed from Mucha. Ya want to bust their chops?
"a certain level of criticism" is one thing. "this poster sucks ass" is NOT constructive crit.
Actually I really like this in a way. Well, without the illo. Something more cartoony would have fit the text better. But this is no where near the worst poster I've seen.. Just a poor use of found art and a missmatched treatment. Imagine this with a Tex Avery style image of a killer clown in place of the woman... that woulda rocked!
yes, everyone steals and creates a reinterpretation. . .but you should really dig a little bit deeper for your resources. . .stealing imagery from a great poster artist to make a new poster is something like the offspring of first cousins.
Duchampe may be the exception
It's worth mentioning that many of us take "found" images & create posters from them (see Methane's Mole Man poster- one of my favorites). Hard to say when it's OK or not I guess. I can't rip on this artist.
And oh yeah...Counting Crows blow
yes there is potential, but they are going in the wrong direction it seems. . ..on a positive note the type is somewhat interesting
once again people should expect a certain level of criticism from this site. . . if not its a bit of a waste isn't it?
Had you guys thought that this might be someone's debut attempt at making posters? That they may just be exploring their artistic side a little?
I hope reading these comments won't make them stop..... there IS potential here.
that girl was originally from an alphonse mucha poster for job cigarettes or something... it looked awesome before this designer used his gradient tool on her. this poster sucks ass
