bilburSend bilbur a message :   ditto dude. I know it's not you (BP) It's a money thing and we are all familiar w/ the all mighty dollar getting in the way of a fun experience (making posters). I'll get the 2nd round.   2003-01-18 15:11:40
perkinsSend perkins a message :   Can U feel the love- It's not hard for me to put myself in Bishop's shoes, since similar shit has happened to me (and probably everyone else) before. I misread your reactions, drinks on me when next we meet.   2003-01-18 09:19:18
connor13Send connor13 a message :   damn perkins, i'm pretty sure bishop and i were just busting your balls dude. i know i was. it just sucks that now billy wont get paid for his poster. this is what he does, he doesnt have a day job to pay the bills with. no ones dogging you out.

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   Yea...we have that color meter thing too. Makes you miss that old Nortwestern climate, huh? Its rough, cause Ive had respitory problems my entire life...and I really can identify with all the stuff they say about the environment getting worse. Went to the Emergency Room one night about 2 years ago because I couldnt breathe. Beautiful sunrise unfolding here. Im gonna take a pic and post it in the forums so you guys can see.   2003-01-18 05:46:57
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   i've experienced houston summers. they ARE legendary. however, i can't say enough bad shit about st. louis' climate. i think it may take the cake for the contintal u.s. people who have been around often say this sux the worst.
and pollution? we all know about la's famous smog - it's almost a media hype it's so advertisied. but out here in good ol' stl, the smog is VERY bad, too. in fatc when they started those 'color days' rating system for pollution (red=dangerous, yellow=be careful, gree=ok, etc.) stl had so many red days (virtually the whole summer) that they began losing federal funding for all sorts of things as a penalty. their solution? add an extra color. now summers are all solid 'orange' days - bad enough to be deadly , but not bad enough to lose funding. red days are now extremely rare. clever, huh?
does that one-up anybody on the 'my town sux worse than your town" meter?
but the springtime and autumn are by far the most spectacular i've experienced ANYWHERE. balance? you decide.

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   I suppose youve heard about Houston summers? And the continual battle with LA for the worst pollution makes it ridiculous. EVERY year since Ive been back, I threaten to move...right around mid-July... Then the late fall comes...and I get seduced again by the temperate weather and the galleries, and scene...and really just 'familiarity'. This is a great town to work in. AFternoon naps are great. 30 minutes feel like 2 hours.   2003-01-18 05:30:51
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   one of the luxuries of turning into and old fart is the opportunity to take an occaissional nap without being called lazy. when you get up way early, i love to take a siesta in the early afternoon hours - just 1/2 hour or so, and it's absolutley blissful.
it's 7 degrees outside. st lous has the worst fucking climate i've ever witnessed. summers are so hot and muggy that friends of mine who live in the mississippi delta even find it unbearable.

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   I gotta get in the habbit of doing this. It does make for fuller days. By 10PM, Im really 'tired'...like in a good way. Im past my 'up all nite', 'rock and roll' days...actually, those 'days' never happened...just an illusion...trying to tolerate some 'scene'. Cant get my thoughts together this morning. Its 28 degrees outside.   2003-01-18 05:09:51
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   oh, and jermaine. lately i've begun waking extremely early. dunno why. i kinda like it though.   2003-01-18 05:07:25
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   i'm a sloppy typist. i just noted a typo that's pretty important to correct in what i last wrote.
the second to last thing i wrote was supposed to say "IT very very rare rarely works that way." the way it's posted originally looks like was saying i DON"T work that way, which is not true. i'm every bit as sloppy as you guys. i make the big mistake of trusting people and then learning the hard way whether that trust is well placed or not. what i've learned that it is almost human nature to get things for free at all costs (!) even really honest nice caring folks will screw you in the pursuit of self-interest. no harm intended, but they will bulldoze you if that ol' "blue-light special" is flashing. it's almost a lizard-brain thing.
so, when two fanboy poster artists see an opportunity to do a cool poster, they will BOTH become self-righteously blinded in pursuit of that goal. so will the promoter, so will the band. but the only folks getting taken advantage of here are the artists. spot the difference. otherwise, your time and talent are worthless freebie stuff.
i've learned this from EXPERIENCE. if you don't value your art and give it away for free, nobody else will value it very much either. when you place a price - ANY price - on it, it is magically an object of value in 'their' eyes (even if it's a lousier piece of art than the freebie). it's human nature in a capitalist system.
avoid duplication. get paid something - anything. get a real agreement with the promoter so there is no misunderstanding and they will see you as providing something of value that they can't get somewhere else. PLACE A VALUE ON YOUR WORK! if you don't nobody else will - no matter haw good you are.

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   OK Chantry...what gives? Its 6 AM on a Sat. morning. Im up because Jen had to go into work at 5 AM, and I get up to get her off safely...and I cant go back to sleep. So Im painting. WHats your excuse? :) This doubling up on posters thing sort of kept me and Charlie at odds for a couple of years. And BOTH of us got permission from SOMEONE involved EVERYTIME. To this day, I still believe Charlie feels on his 'looser' days that I stole shows that were his...and I didnt. And the guys who let it happen NEVER want to get involved and help clear it up. Art's right on this. Austin people: dont let this kind of thing sow mess in your scene and relationships with each other. It'll make your 'fun' life as a poster artist miserable...always looking over your shoulder and like...protecting 'turf'...while the promoters get sell-out shows EVERYtime.   2003-01-18 05:02:03
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   cracks me up. i bring up this "authenticity" oe "multiple poster" problem and i get pegged as a territorial whining paranoid negative prick. it happens to you and you guys get all righteous and upset and then get even more upset that you get called on it in 'public'. make up yer fucking minds. this sort of thing is either good or bad, but quit dogging each other and calling names. just DISCUSS what happened and put it into your experience and try to better next time. just keep in mind what can happen if you are not thorough about doing the "biz" side of things. the whole point behind an 'business agreement' (aka 'contract') is to eliminate surprises - especially surprises like this .
the bottom line is that promoters can be extremely sloppy and have been notoriously sleazy throughout rock history. they will be very happy to have ten different cool FREE posters to sell their show and sell as swag themselves. it all means MORE MONEY in their pockets. it's not about art' and 'loyalty' - don't be stupid. it's not about fandom. most promoters are running a business. most of us, on the other hand, are giving our art away in the vague hopes of getting rich and famous in the (near) future. i very very rarely works that way. wise up.

perkinsSend perkins a message :   Dude, what the fuck?! I thought we already discussed this and you were OK with it. Whatever Emo's told you, they gave me a different story. In any case, they evidently changed their mind, so take it up with them. I asked you to call me, but instead you want to dog me in a public forum. It was a fucking miscommunication, that's all.   2003-01-17 18:30:17
bilburSend bilbur a message :   cheap trick indeed...   2003-01-17 17:59:44
connor13Send connor13 a message :   i was there on two different occasions, in early december when the owner and the booker both told bishop it was his. i think it was pretty well known who had the gig. no clubs gonna pay for two silkscreened posters for the same show. kinda sucks... hey perkins, dont ask me what posters i'm doing this month!

perkinsSend perkins a message :   I spoke with Billy about that at the APES meeting... Emo's told me they weren't sure whether or not anyone was working on it, so I went for it. I found out later that they had already spoken to Bilbur (who I just met), but they decided to commission mine. As far as I know, his is still going to be printed. Totally nice guy, I didn't mean to step on his toes.   2003-01-17 10:58:27
