EwingSend Ewing a message :   looks traced and more of an homage/direct rip. The line quality isn't very consistent.   2009-07-09 16:20:14
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   another possibility is that this art was lifted.
but that lettering is so very "griffiny", ya know?

scrojoSend scrojo a message :   there's a brief window of time when irons could have done this ( after amsterdam but before he left for asia ). if it is his then it's possibly the last thing he did. i'll try and pick up his book from the library today. i seem to remember it had some of his flyer work in it with very similar "E's".   2009-07-08 08:12:48
PlantweedSend Plantweed a message :   I think Irons was in Asia when this was done. My buddy thinks it might be whoever drew this Bay Area demo cover:

but I'm not sure.

ricv64Send ricv64 a message :   ruthies still stands , looks abandoned   2009-07-08 06:22:41
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   What is currently inhabiting Ruthies Inn?   2009-07-08 01:00:44
john seaburySend john seabury a message :   Greg Irons wouldn't copy Griffin. Didn't need to.   2009-07-07 22:45:28
ricv64Send ricv64 a message :   ruthies should be resurrected   2009-07-07 20:53:12
ricv64Send ricv64 a message :   i was wondering greg irons too , he did flyers   2009-07-07 20:52:05
GhostSend Ghost a message :   Even if it was 5 minute quickie?   2009-07-07 20:43:22
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   I see some Griffin trademarks and maybe if he was super drunk I would believe he did it but otherwise I remain fairly unconvinced. Like, the flames are griffinesque but are missing a lot of the extra little flair he put into his flames. Stuff like that.   2009-07-07 20:42:15
GhostSend Ghost a message :   Thanks to everyone one that has now opened me up to Rick Griffin's work. I'm very inspired now. (I'm very new to this 'Gig Poster' thing...) this just blew my world a new asshole. Who else do I need to check out?   2009-07-07 20:19:40
GrushkinSend Grushkin a message :   the skull doesn't look like what Rick would draw. The bones, maybe.   2009-07-07 20:07:03
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   Johnny, the world is chalk full of small minded people.   2009-07-07 19:59:45
SquirtSend Squirt a message :   Looks like Rory Hayes doing a Rick Griffin.   2009-07-07 19:55:38
JohnnyThiefSend JohnnyThief a message :   Griffin did become a Christian, but he was smarter than this generation of pretenders, he did all kinds of subject matter, realizing that it is all ink on paper, & it's ALL 'Christian' subject matter. Only very small minded people try to segregate something like a visual image into something acceptable,... Rick had a good vibe for the pulse of new energy, & was very involved in styles like punk before we lost him.   2009-07-07 19:54:33
scrojoSend scrojo a message :   greg irons maybe ??????   2009-07-07 19:41:51
scrojoSend scrojo a message :   i just shot this over to dennis king for his input. dennis was friends with rick and has a huge collection of rick's original pencils and inks. i quote " maybe, if rick was really drunk and this was on a cocktail napkin. most likely not".
agreed. it looks more like someone trying to draw like rick.

MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   I'd lean towards no but, if it is a yes then it's about the coolest god damn flyer on this site for damn sure.   2009-07-07 18:01:43
msaputoSend msaputo a message :   Yeah, I thought that was a possibility. I don't know though, I'd be surprised if this was legit...there's something about it that just doesn't feel right. It's a good ape if it is though.   2009-07-07 17:54:56
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   it's possible that was an area he left blank and the promoter jotted it in but, he tried to look cool like griffin. seen that happen before many times.   2009-07-07 14:34:47
msaputoSend msaputo a message :   The venue info at the bottom looks suspect to me. Half caps, half lower, one Griffin type "E".
Interesting nonetheless.

ryan_1969Send ryan_1969 a message :   my money is on NO   2009-07-07 14:11:26
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   scott mcdougall might be able to help, too. i'll see if i can run it past him.   2009-07-07 14:06:56
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   one of the things that sort of puts it over the top for me is the lettering. i know people who can fake griffin better than griffin, and they STILL could not have produced that lettering like that.
i dunno. he may have not known who the band was. he may have done it for some kid who simply asked. he may have been on one of his periodic benders and trying to be "opposite-man" who knows? griffin did an enormous amount of contradictory work in his time.
the idea that griffin actually did a slayer/punk poster is awesome. only "punky" street flyer type poster i've ever seen by griffin (if it is).
  2009-07-07 14:06:19
GrushkinSend Grushkin a message :   I've seen a LOT of Griffin over the years, but not this one. As Seabury said, Dennis King might know more.   2009-07-07 13:11:58
john seaburySend john seabury a message :   Maybe copped a drawing and added Griffinesque lettering. The lettering seems a little assymetrical for Griffin. Someone write Dennis K.   2009-07-07 12:53:10
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   hadn't Griffin converted to Christianity by this point? Slayer were very, very into the Satanism shit around this time which I'd guess was around 83-84. Possessed had extreme satanic imagery. Exodus as well. Seems a stretch he would have been into doing work for these bands. And it would have to have been free work as these bands had NO money this early on. I could be wrong though.
  2009-07-07 12:17:33
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   if it's not griffin, i'll eat my hat (if i had one).
any griffin experts out there with a little background on this poster? or is it a rare discovery?
  2009-07-07 12:08:15
VonBartmannSend VonBartmann a message :   I'm sure it's Griffin. It's gotta be.   2009-07-07 05:59:51
ricv64Send ricv64 a message :   i rember seeing this flyer on the street   2009-07-01 22:04:22
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   dang! who did this? it looks just like rick griffin's work. did he do this for some kid?
amazinf thing.
