This one was all airbrush. Ten thousand pieces of frisket to make all that stained glass. Yikes. Early Low. Early Meices. I got a great autograph from Low on this one. Same from the Luna poster and another from the Psyclone Rangers. And the guys in Plexi bought a couple of the heavy metal comic strip looking poster and years later, we met again and he's totally got it on his wall still. Pretty funny. Norm Block. They wanted to remember the night they played with Archers of Loaf back then. Plexi kicked ass on their early ep. There wer a thousand shows like that at Cicero's. Ask any older touring band and they played and loved Cicero's. Ah, the old days of booze and booze and drugs and rock and roll and booze and drugs and Cicero's. Remember that? Me too.
What bar was YOUR Cicero's? (here it comes)
so ANYway. These last four items are a response to Art's note about wanting to see some early stuff. In my recent unpacking of ten tons of garbage from yesteryear, I also have a bbunch of my first posters. The blind and narrow fool I was, I actually painted or cut colored paper and glued or drew or colored on acetate or cel-painted my originals with overlays for the text crudely done in early Corel or some shite and the club paid like a buck a piece for about twenty color copies and we posted them around Delmar in St. Loser and that was about it. These paosters were all done in, say, 1994? Earlier? '95?
We would do a week's calendar at the bottom and sometimes a major artist for the main picture and three or four other artists would rotate. So these are some of those. I did this wasy because i knew nothing of printing or whatever else so the only solution I saw was original art for each one. How would that suit your to construct a piece like this ever time? It is fun to look back at early posters ans see who was playing back then. Early Grifters shows. Low's first album. There's one I didn't get to finish and may post later, incomplete for an English band that I had heard before their album came out. They were booked at Cicero's basement bar. it holds about a hundred people. But they had to cancel the show because they were called Oasis and a week before the show they became the biggest band in the world. I was looking forward to that show. Shit.
So ANYway.
I'll have Clay take these down in a little while but they're fun to look at for a minute.
