Kozik: "St Loius..no big mystery. It's a commercial center like any other town except that theres no more commerce. Like most ghettos the blight is the result of cheap imported labor that had no jobs once the 'boom' was over. Now that theres no reason for St Loius to exist it's slowly rotting away and all the 'talent' and 'money' has left for other places. All cities are artificial constructs that revolve around commerce. A few have like a nice climate or 'entertainment value' and hence can survive economic obsolecense like SF for example or Seattle..but places like St Loius no longer are a 'magnet' for anything. Times change. The place is used up. I wouls also imaginge the power structure was the result of graft and machine politics which are into 'short term' investment for the purpose of skimming...so what you have is a blight zone. They do need to bulldoze it. And there's NO FUTURE fopr the 'losers'. They Lose."
Christ Frank, you nailed it, pretty much describes every city in Upstate NY, esp. the graft/machine politics.

even the grocery stores suck here. BigDumbRockSend BigDumbRock a message :   Good god! Step away for a couple of days and this poster has gone form like maybe a dozen comments to freakin' 160.
And the real sad part of this, for me anyway, is that a whole bunch of people are all bitching at each other that I consider friends, allies and people I respect immensley.
You know if half of the effort that went into you guys slinging mud at each other, and you know who you are, went into some sort of work arrangement, then maybe our town's "scene" may not be considered the big fucking joke it is!
The fact that there is a hugely respected artist who's famous for designing ROCK albums and ROCK posters living in our town, yet nobody but me has even taken the time to get to know him, disgusts me. Don't let the "fame" fool you guys. Art is very easy to work with. Just because he doesn't go to many shows and kiss everybody's ass, doesn't make him difficult. When you've seen as much as he has and has accomplished as much as he has, why should you throw yourself at people just to get the attention of a bunch of hipster fucks? I haven't accomplished a fraction of what Art has and I'm already getting pretty fucking sick of it! So I can only imagine how he feels!
And Art, I hope you weren't speaking about me when you were talking about people pissing on you. I know I haven't been able to pay you for the poster you did for me. I have every intention of doing that but things are extremely rough. Hell, I lost a lot of money on that show! You were there! Probably lost a lot of face too, which believe me hurts a LOT more than the money. But don't think I have forgotten about you. And unlike most of the people you told me about that you've had contact with I DO respect you.
AS far as not seeing these designs around much. Well, I guess I'm mostly to blame. I am but one guy who works a 40 hr a week job. I only have so much time and since I can't seem to keep from having to do some sort of car repair all of the freakin' time, that makes it even more difficult. And the problem with this area is, it's too freakin spread out. You have a couple of different districts that might be good to post things at that are somewhat close together. But most of the people around here live in the suburbs and they are farflung. It's extremely difficult for one guy to cover all of that area.
Plus there's a matter of budget. I'm nor doing this off of some sort of business loan or trust fund. I'm running my shows off of my own personal income. My own hardearned cash. And unfortunatly, people around here wouldn't know good rock and roll if it poked out one of their eyes and skullfucked them! If it's not on the "alternative" radio station or MTv. Or if it's not one of your buddies bands, people around here aren't interested. Getting anybody at all is like pulling teeth. So I guess getting 50 people to see EF should be considered lucky. Or 30 people to see the ILCK. Well I think it sucks!
So to end what may be the longest reply to anything ever on this site, let me end by saying this. If we want to change anything around here, and I really do, we need to work together instead of bitching at each other. We shouldn't lay into somebody when they were actually trying to help. We all have similar taste. We all have common goals. We're all pissed about being dismissed and overlooked simply because of the cluelessness of the assholes who happen to populate our city. And we're all tired of being the best at what we do and yet not get shit for it other than really drunk and some great friendships and memories.
There, I'm done. See you fuckers at the bar.

one last thing - hanging posters is not the artists' job, it's the club's job. i think that you saw the poster for that one show (that i designed the poster for) at all is a tribute to 'bigdumbrock's' supreme efforts, since he didn't get the posters into his hands until the actual day of the show. it also didn't help much that it was supposed to be at the hi-pointe (your club) and at the last minute was dumped from the schedule without warning so that the show in question was held at the creepy crawl (so your club could put on a FREE show). it was a miracle that anybody showed up at jim's show at all.
so, all yer high and mighty crap about what a swell scene this is, well, that's so much crap until i actually see otherwise.
oh, and why should i introduce myself to you and suck up to you and your band and kiss your feet so i can do a poster for free and then allow you to profit off them? i'm in the phone book. YOU call ME. that's the way it's always worked in the real world. i've sucked up to enough promoters in this town and been pissed on. savvy?

you've got some attitude. and that's why i don't get to do posters in this town. i hit on lots of promoters and clubs and everybody treated me like i was some sort of joke. i was used to that from seattle days, so st. louis 'hip' community being too cool for school was no real shock. it just struck me as the ususal elitist rocknroll crap.
for you to condemn me first for not doing any posters 'because i'm too good for local bands", and then to condemn me for 'not trying hard enough to get work' from local hipsters that think they're too good for me is the height of provincial arrogance.
you just want to trash me. ok, enjoy. or you can make an effort. i've done my time in the music scene. do yours, then get back to me and we'll compare notes. i'll bet they'll be the same.

ok, so i don't go drive over to the hi-pointe and walk inside and check out the wall to see what's coming. does anybody? i check the rft and the poster/flyers on the wall. i walk the u-city loop all the time. i have never seen one hi-pointe poster. in fact i've never seen any posters except little flyers for lost dogs, messages and hippie banjo music.
so, if you don't post a poster in public, i doesn't matter what it sez, or what the picture is. it just exists in a silent limbo, speaking to no-one.
go out and set up a circuit and regularly poster the town. follow the bus lines. you'll be amazed what it could do for this city. then people could really honestly raise a ruckus about your poster image, instead of just this website that has a rather fixed personal interest in this stuff. posters are supposed to engage the PUBLIC, not other artists.

art chantrySend art chantry a message :   johnny shame - as per your 'challenge' and all that - you really have no idea what i'm about or what i'm saying, do you? i started by simply pointing out that i find fault with posters on this site that i consider to be not really be posters at all. i chose yours as an example because, like most st. louis posters, they seem to be private art pieces not intended for public consumption. i see no challenge in it, and i don't think they actually meet the definition of posters (or flyers). they are just sorta 'fake' posters to my mind. i've spent almost 30 years toiling with no budgets, no printing, no "art galleries" (huh?), no help, no thanks, no money, etc. etc. to promote this (as i see it) 'language form' into something that can be effctive for the bands and the fans and the business heads. i've always seen my efforts as in the interest of expanding community (often only to my own exploitation). at the same time i've hoped to bring it up to a new an exciting level of visual art - hopefully on par with rock posters of the past. it's cost me an entire lifetime's earnings to follow this passion.
when i see 'fake' posters put up on this site as legimate pieces of intended public discourse knowing full well that that the only people who will ever see them is a small group of gigposter gadflies, well, it just sorta makes all of this lifelong effort seem in vain.
that's all. i really don't much care about you and your lame little posters beyond that. go forth and multiply.

FinchSend Finch a message :   Mr. Eye - In response to your comment...
I'm not going to turn this into a pissing contest, but I would like to clarify some things.
Given that this site is dominated by illustrators and designers, I assumed that the vast majority of the folks who post on here are very aware of who Art Chantry is. His name isn't just known in "design" circles - I believe Estrus makes a point to pimp any album that he does the design for by noting that the sleeve design is by Art Chantry. It is a selling point by now.
I at no time made a critical comment about this poster, so I don't know where you get off referring to me as "art critic extroidinaire". As a matter of fact, if you check out the second comment on this poster, you'll see that I simply made a juvenile smart-assed remark about the photo on the poster.
I'm not in St. Louis, so I can't say how well known Art is there - but if you come to a site dominated by illustrators and designers and you feel the need to start slinging the mud, I'd suggest you do a little homework before doing so. At least know what the hell you are talking about before you hit the "Submit" button...
On that note, I'm out of this discussion. I've got other posters to play art critic on.

art chantrySend art chantry a message :   sarge - you got flimsy standards. that's ok. i guess according to you 175 years of poster history have had it all wrong? oh, well...   2002-10-22 19:28:39
seripopSend seripop a message :   posters that don't get posted aren't posters. say that 10 times fast.   2002-10-22 19:27:21
kozikSend kozik a message :   no. My personal 'rule' is that there be actual physical ones in existence and they be hung at least at the venue in order for it to be 'legit'. I used to insist on actual 'street posting' as well, but that seems a rarity for these larger color pieces.
but, semantics aside, design or style wise it does indeed count as a 'rock poster'.
Now, I am assuming some where reproduced.
if not, then it's a nice 'rock poster design'.

seripopSend seripop a message :   and how are u representative of "the rock community" and knowing that others on this site might not alo be involved in music "the eye"?   2002-10-22 19:25:56
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   so, let me get this straight... all i have to do is make up some little thing on my desk, scan it in and post it here and it becaomes a real legitimate rock poster just like all of the work you've done?   2002-10-22 19:24:21
kozikSend kozik a message :   your looking at it.
it's 'being seen'
a bit out of context, yes, but observable nonetheless.
ALL current rock posters are 'extra non essential fluff' anyways.
give me 20 MAGGOT!

I think that 'counts'

art chantrySend art chantry a message :   i think this is a great and offensive poster. i LIKE offensive posters. no problem there. the point i was making is that if you design a poster just for yourself and don't really hang it up as a communication to the public (of some sort), i don't really think it's a poster. i really don't know what it is. since i moved here to st. louis, i've never seen any gigposters posted anywhere, so when i see things like this popping up on this site, i wonder what they are, because i spend a great deal of time looking at and for posters everywhere, and i don't ever see any of these 'st. louis' posters. are they just private portfolio pieces being passed off as legitimate poster advertisiments? i guess i don't don't get it.
that's all.

print it and hang up for people to see and reat to, or there's no real point in calling it a poster.
