i think oda did the lettering inside the balloons, etc. but the fm lettering seems to always be associated with chester. i think much of the fm lettering pre-dates oda's involvement.
exactly WHO did that great lettering in fm is still something i'm trying to pin down with precision.
harry chester is still alive (i think), but is in retirement somewhere and i haven't been able to find him despite some 30 years of occasional attenpts.
famous monster magazine was THE BEST. the art director, harry chester, was the greatest "monster type" lettering artists who ever lived. and his layout stuff was impeccably tatty. the best clip ever.
he also designed the mad magazine "design" (layout, whatever you want to call it.) just compare old "fm" or "spacemen" or "creep/eerie" to mad and see the obvious style tricks. he also did harvey kurtzman's "help" magazine that introduced terry gilliam, robert crumb, gilbert shelton and gloria stienem (!) to the world.
harry chester is one of my all-time heroes.
